GTA IV: Best game in over a decade, say critics

GTA IV not just a hit with the public as critics rate it amongst the very best games ever

According to Metacritic, the website that compiles reviews from respected critics and publications for film, DVD, books, television and games, the latest edition of the Grand Theft Auto series has scored 99 out of 100, an almost unprecedented score.

The only other game to score that highly is Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Also notching up a score of 99 out of 100, the Zelda game was released in 1998 on the Nintendo 64 platform.

Previous high achievers include Soul Calibur (Dreamcast) and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 (PlayStation), both with 98 out of 100.

Halo (Xbox) and Metroid Prime (GameCube) are two of the few games to reach 97 out of 100. GTA III from 2001 also scored 97 and Wii Super Mario Galaxy is the most recent highly praised game of recent years with a metascore of 97.

Metacritic takes an average score from the reviews it compiles. GTA IV, released today, has had its review score based on 23 critics reviews so far.

I believe the quote "amongst the very best games ever" is SPOT ON!

I've had it since saturday, and although slow to get into at the beginning, it's absolutely amazing once gotten use to everything.

Jimothy is asolutely correct on that one, at first it feels like everything is different, then after 2 or so hours it feels like gta is back home and beter than ever. As close to perfection as possible, maybe even beter than zelda:oot. But not as good as my fave, Banjo:Kazooie.

Can anyone hazard a guess as to the total development cost for the game? £20m? £40m? More?
