French retail giant eyes UK market

But electronics and games chain Fnac says it has ‘no immediate plans’ to open stores across the Channel

French retail chain Fnac has set its sights on the UK market, although the firm stresses that there are no store openings just yet.

The company is the largest French retailer of cultural and consumer electronics, which includes video games, consoles, televisions, cameras, CDs, DVDs and books. It’s also the market leader in Belgium, Spain and Portugal, with stores in Italy, Greece and Switzerland.

“Every year, in France, Fnac receives 150 million visitors and serves 18 million consumers,” said a spokesperson for Fnac management. “We’re also the leading computer, book and music store in France.”

Reports last month indicated that Fnac was preparing to open a 50,000 square foot site in London as a launchpad for a network of UK stores.
However, the retailer has told MCV that there is no active project to open stores just yet:

“For the moment we don’t have any project of opening stores in UK, nor do we plan to launch website fnac.com in the UK. We are currently just looking at the UK market.”
