Barack Obama talks GTA IV

US presidential reiterates worry that ‘video games are raising our kids’

Democratic leadership candidate Barack Obama yesterday mentioned GTA IV’s release in a speech… without even a hint of moral hysteria.

Addressing citizens in Indiana, Obama made reference to the game's popularity – before seeming to back the industry’s message of it being an ‘adult game for adults’.

According to GamePolitics he nodded to GTA’s likelihood of “breaking all records” before stating “this [game] isn’t intended for kids”.

Obama then went on to conclude that the title would unfortunately be played by children anyway, and re-iterated his worry that “video games are raising our kids” – encouraging parents to “turn off the TV set”.

He said: “I was just catching the news this morning about Grand Theft Auto, this video game, which is gonna break all records and make goo-gobs of money for whoever designed it.

“Now, this isn’t intended for kids, although I promise you there are kids who are playing it, but these video games are raising our kids…

“Across the board, middle-class, upper-class, working-class kids, they’re spending a huge amount of their time not on their studies, but on entertainment.

“And so part of our job is going to have to be to inspire the entire country to say, ‘How are we giving our kids a thirst for knowledge?’

“And turning off the TV set, and getting them to be engaged and interested, like their future really does matter on how well they do in school.”

Oh well, what can you say to a pupet wh ois controlled by the puppet masters? nothing, you have no say, Barack will not win, Mccain will, he is a neo con, how funny it is when neo con is so close to neo nazi? oh well, as a human being I an dsigraced by these so called leaders who lead us down a path of destruction.

GTA 4 is a game, it's not real life, if Barack had any balls he would question 911, but he doesn't nor does anyone else, we are doomed and they are in control.

Good luck "free world" you'll need it....

Hey vril I think you mistyped reddit.com in your browser.

I question the validity of a presidential candidate's view on a game being newsworthy.

I just wish a UK politician could recognise GTA's release as important... and then tell parents to watch watch their kids consume as a separate point.

Sadly, they'd rather jump straight to 'violent games hurt your kids!' without questioning how youngsters get to play them in the first place.

This is a trade website, not somewhere to vent your conspiratorial views on american politics.

What I meant (which flew right over your head) was take it to a place where people will gladly masturbate your notions that the world is coming to an end.

@3. I think the next leader of the free world recognising GTA's success without reverting to crazy, knee-jerk statements is pretty relevent news.

His ongoing campaign against PARENTS not retailrs lik me is very refreshing from a senior politician.

Not newsworthy? Is that why you clicked on the story? (Joke).

Vril is right though, they'll pull the same sort of nasty trick on us as they did in 2000. That used 2b called a Coup d' Etat, no'mo no less, it happens while our dumb ****ing braindead & paralysed parents sit in front of the telly, and we enjoy ourselfs BIGTIME with a videogame that is basically a (superb) parody on the ****ed-up state of America 2day...largely due to neo-con policy itself.
Like that silly War on Terror brought us CoD4...so hurray 4 appointing presidents, cause luv & peace don't play so well. Yeah, God bless.

As someone mentioned above, this is a trade website. If a story makes reference to games that has an effect on our industry its perfectly normal to have an article on it, especially when it talks about the biggest release of the year and a possible future political leader.

We're all entitled to our opinions, but I think I can speak for the MCV moderators here when I ask that the language be kept clean. Yes, there are filters in place, but there's no need for that kind of language to get your views across.

Come on folks, we're all adults here, lets not get into a flaming habit!

GTA IV is for 17+ and he knows it. It is the parents job to screen what a kid sees & enforce it accordingly.
Hilary on the other hand is MEGA anti-video games. Hilary Clinton, Joe Lieberman & Jack Thompson are All Video game haters... I mean what the difference between the films "Casino", Good Fellas, OR multi award winning "The Departed" All Violent, All Rated R (Not for kids), All have harsh language. It's a fictitious story "told to you" where as Video Games (Grand Theft Auto 4 in particular) are stories which you get to choose the direction it goes...
As for the stuff about "games/enertainment over studies" probably true in some cases but I don't think is across the board - everyone likes to put work second if they can & some times when their not supposed to, it happens were human & we don't like doing tedious stuff we'd rather have Down-time...

As for Me I think I'm gonna go have some down time & play my Grand Theft Auto IV: Special Edition. Yeah, I was first in line at my local EB/Gamestop (around 10:30pm on 4/28; released at 12:00 AM4/29) & I'm not a violent, murdering, psychopath... yet. By the way Jack Thompson, you sue happy poop-head lets do lunch talk about our views & KISS & Make-up... LOLHAHAHA *silence* no really....

Ish, good post, surely it's the parents' responsibility to keep an eye on what their children are doing?...Funny that Obama seems to think switching the TV off is a bad thing for kids, makes them more difficult to brainwash when you don't feed them media all day doesn't it...unless of course he genuinely believes that the kids watch TV to get 'educated'...they're all a bunch of useless bozos after votes and money.
