Game tops $500m in its first week – beating out Harry Potter, Halo 3 and Pirates Of The Caribbean
GTA IV has become the most lucrative entertainment launch of all time – dwarfing best-ever releases in music, video and literature.
Take Two has confirmed that GTA IV sold six million units globally in its first week – with an estimated retail value of more than $500 million.
The title sold approximately 3.6 million units on its opening day with a retail value of approximately $310 million globally.
The previous biggest entertainment launch week was that of cinema blockbuster Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End (2007), which took $404 million at the Box Office.
"We knew Grand Theft Auto IV would break new ground in terms of the player's experience, with its compelling story line, extraordinary gameplay and action that ranges over a broad urban canvas. Now, it has broken sales and rating records as well,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two.
“Grand Theft Auto IV's first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date. We congratulate the entire Rockstar team on creating a must-have experience that takes the legendary Grand Theft Auto franchise to a new level."
"Rockstar's goal is to make each new title in the Grand Theft Auto franchise even better than those that preceded it, and Grand Theft Auto IV is a smashing success on that score,” said Ben Feder, Take-Two's Chief Executive Officer.
“Grand Theft Auto IV makes full use of the power of next generation technology, and offers players an experience unique in the interactive entertainment medium. This game sets a new standard in the industry, with critics hailing it as both an artistic and technological masterpiece,"

Wow
That is truly phenomenal! No matter which publisher you work for, your platform preference, whoever you are, you have to be impressed with sales figures like that. Everyone will have their opinions on the content, but GTA and gaming in general is proving how important it is to the consumers of today. Hats off to Rockstar and Take 2 for an amazing product.
Oustanding..
...well done Take 2 & R* , You have made a terrific game, and it's great to see you are truly being rewarded for it.
Amazing work.
Re: Oustanding..
Agreed ... any company that puts as much blood, sweat and tears into the development of a game the way Rockstar have deserve every penny they get.
Its good to see that not every games company believes that making a worthwhile and innovative franchise is just a matter of adding '07 or '08 to the end of the games title.
