Hirai: 'We’re not competing with Microsoft or Nintendo'

Wider entertainment market is the real target for PS3, says SCE president

Forget Microsoft and Nintendo – PS3’s content can take on movies, TV and the web in the battle for the wider entertainment space.

That was the message from SCE president Kaz Hirai as he spoke to MCV at this week’s PlayStation Day, at which the platform holder revealed a string of triple-A titles and online community projects.

After SCEE president David Reeves confidently emphasised that PS3 had now overtaken its main rival Xbox 360 in SCEE territories with five million sales since its launch, Hirai sat down with MCV to elaborate further on Sony’s vision for PS3.

“I think that PS3, PS2 and PSP are all entertainment platforms so I feel that our competition is not Microsoft or Nintendo, but basically any form of entertainment that is competing for the consumers’ attention,” said Hirai.

“So we need to make sure we offer the most compelling entertainment – not videogame entertainment but in entertainment in general. I can’t speak for their strategy but I like to think that we’ve got a very well balanced portfolio with PS3, PSP and you can’t discount the PS2.”

Right, so Microsoft arent your competitors but instead your rivals?

I know they are two different words but surely in this industry, they are effectively the same thing?!

Talk about PSX Deja Vu... and we all know what happened there with Sony's "all-in-one entertainment system".

I guess that's why they daren't mention it in interviews like this.

I dont want to fuel a fanboy fire but Aaron Greenberg makes some very good an pretty true comments.

It doesnt matter what side of the fence you're on, you cant really disagree with the points he raises in that post.

I reckon, if the PS3 were in front, then the other hardware manufacturers would be considered competition.

No idiots, he said All forms of Entertainment is their competitor.
Meaning including Nintendo and Microsoft, learn how to read between the lines.

Aaron Greenberg, is acting like a rat trapped in a flooding cage.. He is picking on things he thinks he can, but anybody can see things are slowly changing soon he won't be able to say anything.
Gears and Gears 2 are not their games they are EPIC's, Msft is just publishing it for them, Killzone is Sony owned game..
if anything he should compare Resistanace, Resistance 2 with Gears, Gears 2.
but of course he wouldn't do that because those games will come out on time and that would only make his stupid argument weaker.

Yes, is picking on things he can, because he can pick on things that he can. Make sense?

I was also under the impression that GOW was exclusive to Microsoft? I know its Epics game but isnt Killzone Guerilla's game? I dont see your point?

Why should he compare Resistance with GOW?

Gears of war epic's game that is on the 360. Epic makes UT3 on ps3 and such so Microsoft doesnt own epic. Guerilla makes killzone 2 and is owned by sony, hence no other systems can have the game that arnt sony systems. Resistance 2 is made from Insomniac, Now insomniac makes ratchet and clank as well they make only sony games but are not owned by sony.

Sony sells more units arround the world than MS does the only place MS has is North America and that is starting to fade fast as sony has sold more units than MS in north america this year Sony's big hitters coming out soon I dont see that changing. With 16 months head start sony has sold more ps3 than ms has sold 360's, and lets not even talk about japan. fact is Ms is going to get in some troubles fast when sony gets close to there numbers this year or passes it with that head start ms had its going to make them look bad.

The 16 month head start I was talking about was in europe btw forgot to put that in there. PS3 out selling 360 in total units in europe not just in month to month.

id have to agree with the above 2 posters
with the coming titles for the ps3, MS can't do anything to stop them.
ull see the ps3 sell more units when mgs, littlebigplanet, GT, and FF come out
the only system sells MS would have might be fable 2 and thats stretching it

Maybe the reason the PS3 is in last IS because they are splitting their attention. So he is basically saying "we are not competing, so we can't be blamed for losing."

Or maybe it's because they don't see games as a viable entity anymore, but they are all about the whole entertainment Blu-Ray package, and it's laughable ever since the HD wars i sover Sony only shifted and few extra PS3's. it just goes to show no one gives a toss about HD, untill 99% of homes have set top box or TV that supports it.

Yet again Sony going in the wrong direction, wheres HOME,KZ2 and LBP? and here is Kaz Hirai talking about a wider entertainment package, and yet that don't support anything that is entertainment, wheres the video store?

Complete and utter rubbish on Sony's part, they need to learn from M$ and Nintendo and offer a better fuller online entertainment experience.

But how many people are using their PS3s as a blu ray player rather than to play games...
