Somerfield gets into games

Supermarket bringing Woolworths concessions into stores – and software is on the menu

A new Somerfield store based in Surrey will carry a full range of games when it opens on June 11th, marking another big-name entrant to the interactive entertainment market.

The move follows a deal with Woolworths and will see three Somerfield stores trial Woolies’ products in areas covering 3,000 sq ft.

“Our customers will appreciate being able to buy Woolworths’ products in our stores – and having Woolworths’ concessions in our stores will attract new customers to come and experience the new Somerfield that we have created,” said Somerfield chief exec Paul Mason.

The move, reportedly designed to use up unused floor space, will also see Woolworths carry Somerfield stock.

A spokesman for Woolworths said it was too early to say whether further stores would stock games.

“Naturally we will look at the results of the trial and both retailers will make a decision,” he said.
