kaz hirai, ps3, sony‘PS3 confused third parties’, says Hirai

SCE president Kaz Hirai puts launch difficulties down to a lack of understanding in the industry

After admitting to a packed PlayStation Day audience that PS3’s first year was difficult, Hirai later told MCV that part of the problem was a lack of understanding from Sony’s third party partners.

“I think there was some confusion as to what PS3 was initially – some of the third parties didn’t understand and they wanted to scale back a little and see how things went before they really put in their resources,” said Hirai. “But when I re-positioned the PS3 as a video games console at Tokyo Game Show I think everybody got that message loud and clear.”

Hirai’s comments came as he also revealed that he does not consider Nintendo or Microsoft to be competition, as Sony is targeting the wider entertainment space with PS3 – take a look here for his comments in full.

Oh NOW I see...!
The PS3 is a GAMES console! All this time and I thought it was a washing machine, no wonder the 3rd parties were so confused...

Am I missing something here?

Does Kaz have any idea of what he's been saying this week? First the PS3 is an entertainment machine that doesn't compete with other games consoles and now it's a games console again?

And who's fault is that Kaz? It's not the devs. They seem to understand the 360 and Wii perfectly fine and believe me, the Wii is much more of a fundemental shift in gaming than the PS3 ever will be.

No wonder they were confused what with all the laughable bigging up of PS3 Sony were doing. So it's that powerfull its beyond the understanding of mere mortals then? Typical Sony arrogance again!

“Can you tell what it is yet?”

So it's a "computer" when they are trying to avoid the import tax on consoles... It's a "games console" when they want to win the console wars.... And when they see people are buying it as a Blu-Ray player, it's an "entertainment centre".

I'm sure if they shift the goalposts enough times, one will go in.

Whichever way you look at it, this is just another Sony body swerve to try and avoid the fact that people now know that the machine doesn't deliver the promised hype.

I think they should actually try delivering on the promises and delaying the excuses... instead of the other way round... just for a change.

I know what he was on about, I hope he doesent intend to say sorry every playstation day. I want him to rectify his mistakes, just because it's selling well doesent mean it's actually good, look at the Wii for that matter lol Joke.

I think he's under estimating MS cause they are both multi media entertainment systems. Sony being a hardware company will surely want to attack every angle to the fullest, while Microsoft being a software company will focus mostly on the gaming aspect.

As for Nintendo, it doesn't fall into the same category imo. It's still a last gen console with a new peripheral. Adding motion sensors to an Xbox or PS2 won't make them a next gen console, will it? Think of what makes a pc newer, CPU's and GPU's not a controller/joystick or webcam.

funny that the "software company" has less first party software assets than the "hardware company". as ps3 rolls out a slew of exclusives these next few months.

To mangus... it's called a dual shock 3... look it up.
Who cares what it's called... it can do everything, it's just made itself into a new catagory!
You have dvd players, you have blu ray players, you have media servers, you have games consoles, you have computers, you have music players, and then you have a PS, which does them all.
