Platform holder predicts slight increase from 9.24 million unit sales in last fiscal year

Sony expects to sell 10 million PS3 units in the next financial year.

That’sonly slightly up from up from the 9.24 million the firm this morning announced it had shifted for the 12 months ending March 31st, 2008.

PSP hardware sales – which led the way for the PlayStation family in the last year – will rise to 15 million from 13.89 in fiscal 07, said the firm.

Sony also predicted that PS2 sales will drop off quickly, down to an expected nine million units from the 13.73 million just posted.

I hope they have the stock sorted to meet a demand higher than that - but they better be getting something decent ready for the UK market - this crappy 40GB unit just aint gonna cut the mustard when PlayTV is unleashed let alone everything else. Ideally a machine with the higher quality components (such as the blu-ray drive) from the original 60GB unit, with 4 USB ports on front, another two on the back and something in the region of 160GB+ hard drive space would be a good idea, aimed at the higher end (£399.99? - better have Dual Shock 3 and a Blu-ray remote bundled in too along with a game and AAA blu-ray and possible sort blu-ray recordability if the freeview tuner is going to support BBC-HD soon). That plus a drop to £250 on the 40GB for the xmas run and they'll be laughing.

In all serousness though - do Sony have such a low belief in the PS3 that they dont think they'll sell so few more than the last year? Overall it IS a better product. Maybe not directly for gamers, but overall for the markets it can go after. Then again maybe thats the problem.

Perhaps Sony should be thinking of a unit aimed at the AV market that under the skin is a premium version of the PS3 with extra ports, bigger HD, built in Play-TV and Blu-ray recording and put it in a case that looks like a blu-ray player and has a sticker stating "PS3 game compatible" on it.

No hold on - I am flashbacking to the CDTV... Wheres Commodore when you need them (going bankrupt... AGAIN.)

For the first time with the PS3, Sony has a realist target.
