Microsoft claims console is first next-gen system to reach target in territory; Global Xbox Live membership surpasses 12m
Microsoft has announced that Xbox 360 has become the first next-gen home console to hit 10 million unit sales in the US.
"History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle," said Microsoft senior VP Don Mattrick in a statement.
The Xbox 360 was the first of this latest generation of game machines to launch in the United States in November 2005. The PS3 and Wii followed a year later.
According to Reuters: ‘The Wii is closing on the 360 with 8.8 million units sold as of the end of March, while Sony has totalled 4.1 million PS3 units sold, according to market research firm NPD.’
Microsoft also said global membership of its Xbox Live online service has reached 12 million members.

But how many of those were replacements for faulties??
Re: faulties
Rofl PS3 fanboys just cant resist can they lol....
Re: faulties
I know.
They love it, they feed off it. Snoop... Get a LIFE.
Re: faulties
It says sales. Replacements aren't sales. Stop me if I'm going too fast for you snoop.
Pretty impressive from Nintendo to get that many wii's. I'm not particularly a huge fan of the wii (i like my gfx) but i like seeing a company doing well after everyone said they were nuts.

Good point, especially when you consider that Microsoft extended the warranties.
The interesting thing for me is, the VP says that historically, the machine to reach 10m units first, wins the battle.
The only thing is, this console race has been a bit different to all the others when you consider the time gaps between the release of the machines and the average console life cycle.
When the PS3 gets into its stride properly, y'know, when they actually release the games they've been talking about for the last two years (yawn), surely it wont be long before rumours start on the successor to the 360?
Which I presume would mean the the race would technically be over before its actually over?! You with me?
In my eyes, the only way a console race can be won is when consoles are going head to head all the time. In this generation, Wii has done its own thing in its own time, PS3 has shipped a year later then 360 and its most likely that Microsoft will release details of their new console long before Sony have any plans to. Which in my opinion, means they are all running their own race, which technically means they're not competing with each other.
I know in reality, its not seen that way but as much as they are all games machines, they all offer different experiences and I think its high time people started looking at it that way and stopped with the fan boy s**t.
Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are all selling loads of units and doing well, if this was the case 10 years ago, then maybe SEGA, who have been one of the most innovative consoe manufacturers ever, would still be in the hardware game?!
Sniff........
Re: faulties
@2
And the Xbox fanboys can't help but rush to defend their precious games console...
You're all as bad as on another.
Re: faulties
@6
I cant see anything on any of these posts that indicates that anyone is a 360 fanboy?!
Re: faulties
Then you're blind.
Re: faulties
@6
You are clearly reading something else. There are no 360 fanboys even making comments? or defending "their precious games console"
Where did you get that from?
Re: faulties
@5 I never really thought about it like that. For all the talk and hype being thrown about you're right. This isn't a war at all. They are competing for sales but it all seems very disjointed.
Hopefully this year the ps3 can get out a good set of high quality games. As a 360 owner I'd like to see more competition between the two consoles because it will only force developers to push the envelope and take risks and thats the sort of thing that keeps the gaming industry innovative ... and my game collection interesting :D

@ 9
Well, posts one asks a simple, if not misguided question, and then is imeadiately accused of 'fanboyism' by posts 2 & 3. Sorry, but their responses to such a simple questions is text book.
Opene your eyes, idiot.
Re: faulties
Yes cause it was a "simple, if not misguided question"
No it wasn't, it was pure SARCASM and a Rhetorical question. Not constructive in anyway. If this was meant to be a constructive question he needs to rephrase it.
and calling me an "Idiot"? Coming from someone who can't spell for ****.
Good day.
Re: faulties
Let's get a few things straight...
The article is not specific regarding replacements (prob not something that they want to shout about to be fair)
I would have thought that comments such as "Get a Life" are more likely to be questioned in terms of how constructive they are.
In all seriousness though, where I work we have had to deal with literally hundreds of 360 faulty returns for the usual reasons- it doesn't seem to be slowing, & I feel that the console's image amongst consumers looking to buy a next gen console has been tainted somewhat.
The fanboy comments are misguided- I am simply commenting on my experiences, & have better things to do than get into a war of words over which is the better machine.
-_-
You are all fags get a life..
Bitchig over he internet.. Why don't you try it in real life.
Oh yeah that's right because you'll get your ass kicked and your dick punched so hard you'll cum fear!!!
Re: -_-
@ 14
I wonder how long a sad little individual like you has been waiting to pass such a comment. Get a life yourself, IDIOT.
I suggest you read what is being said its not about the internet, FREAK.
Re: -_-
@ 14
This coming from someone posting a comment on a gamers site himself!! Hahaha. I think your the Fag mate!!
Re: -_-
@ Snoop76
You just said..
"The article is not specific regarding replacements"
So why did you bring it up in your first post with...
"But how many of those were replacements for faulties!??"
Your losing me here.
I'm simply defending the fact that no one is being an XBOX fanboy here. Your first post was enough to make someone think your a fanboy. Bringing up replacements for faulty 360's. which is completely irrelevant to this topic.. this is about SALES.
You are going to get a reaction like that, when you post first with a very sarcastic irrelevant question.
Re: Faulties
To everybody questioning snoop let me say this
he has a valid point.....after 2 straight months of having to send my xbox back multiple times for a repair id had enough....i took a sledgehammer to my old xbox and bought and bought an elite
so the point he is making is "how many people bought xbox's because of pervious xbox failure" which i think is fair enough
Re: Faulties
@18
If that is the point he was making then he should of said that.
Which he didn't. End of.
