Global youth survey findings suggest Sony’s console is winning the console brand war amongst youngsters
New worldwide research has revealed that the brand power of PlayStation is as strong as ever, as it remains the aspirational console of choice for teens.
Nearly 60,000 teenagers between the ages of 11 and 18 across 31 markets took part in a survey conducted by youth-oriented virtual world Habbo, highlighting their preference for PS3 in every age group apart from 11-12 year olds, amongst whom the Wii came out top.
69 per cent referred to the PS3 console as ‘great’ or ‘good’, followed closely by the Nintendo Wii at 64 per cent and Xbox 360 at 58 per cent.
The Wii was found to be more popular amongst girls up to 16 years, and was the favoured female choice overall. The results also show that whilst the Xbox 360 is less popular in Europe and Asia, its popularity in the Americas fares much better: it is the most popular console in Mexico and Colombia and takes second place in the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela.
“The results of this survey are interesting as it gives us an insight into which brands these teens aspire to as the level of ownership does not correspond to the consoles’ popularity,” explained Emmi Kuusikko, director of User and Market Insight at Sulake.
Of the teens surveyed, 24 per cent owned a Wii, with 21 per cent and 23 per cent owning a PS3 and Xbox 360 respectively.
The results suggested significant growth potential; with each of these consoles there was another 20 per cent of teenagers planning on buying one of them in the next 12 months.
The Wii and PS3 had the most sales potential: the amount of respondents that were interested in buying one was four to five percentage points higher than for Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

PS3 the top choice for teens
Well anything over a year old is ancient, innit!
Re: PS3 the top choice for teens
sony never failed people,M$ did many people including me.
Re: PS3 the top choice for teens
I disagree.
Re: PS3 the top choice for teens
I love the ps3 the best but I play my 360 a lot well... call of duty 2 and gears of war... Ninja Gaiden 2 will rock and banjo kazooie... looks like ill have to wait but the same goes for killzone 2 and god of war and resistance 2. One thing is for sure I do like it bloody and i do like the killing!! And both graphically amazing even though the ps3 is better. I still like my xbox.
Re: PS3 the top choice for teens
At least we now know why the forums everywhere are in the state they are. I think anyone could have told you that Sony appealed to 12 year olds...
@2: If Sony never failed anyone, then why did Europe get shafted with backward compatibility and pay a higher price to go with it? Why do 40GB PS3 owners get shafted with BC completely? Why did they make promises about features we're still not seeing 18 months into the life of the console, even though we've had about 20+ firmware updates. Why did they refuse to add rumble saying it was last-gen and then release a controller with rumble in it so we'd have to buy another controller? Why did all their pre-rendered hype footage turn out to be nothing like the final versions of the games it was pretending to represent? Why did they release a "True" HD console (allegedly) and after already "failing" to supply a HD lead, we now find several games not even running in HD?
Take off the blinkers, Sony is right up there with the worst of them. Yes the 360 had a high failure rate but you obviously don't realise how many PS1's would only play games while they were upside down. Or how many PS2's had multiple and frequent laser failures. Or how many PSP's had Square button problems and flexible drive door problems. And whilst all these problems existed, not once did they do the decent thing of extending any warranties to cover them. They were quite happy to charge you for any repair.
Re: PS3 the top choice for teens
THIS is what I get when I Google 'teens'? :(
Re: PS3 the top choice for teens
@5: Exactly, I'm in the UK and was going to buy a PS3 as soon as it launched. I didn't even consider the 360. Then I got shafted by a delayed release, far too overpriced launch price, mediocre (at best) launch titles and no backwards compatibility.
Sony definetely let me down. As usual they have favoured the North American and Asian market of the European one.
Re: PS3 the top choice for teens
@ 6. That has to be one of the best comments I've read on MCV for a while. ;)
Re: PS3 the top choice for teens
A button problem and a non aligning door, oh and firmware updates? Are you saying that is a lot worse than your entire console failing on you? Is this Bill
Gates?
Not surprised
When you look at Sony's history regarding marketing, its not surprising to hear they're winning the advertising battle.
Proof that that style does come before substance these days.
I'm sure once Sony get the PS3 ball rolling properly, they'll be able to justify the machines success but at the moment, I'm confused as to why its the more popular chioce?!
Re: !!
@13
I'd love to respond to that but Northern Monkey and Ofrodian already have taught me that its pointless.
Re: !!
@7: What backwards compatibility didn't you get at PS3 launch? You seem to have moroned your timescales...
Re: !!
@12: When the PS3 (60gb model) launched it was as backward compatible as my dvd player is with my video tapes.
My timescale is just fine. The PS3 took until christmas before it was even close to being fully backwards compatibility and by then they had already decided to scrap the feature.
Re: !!
Well I used to think that the PS3 was just a huge mess compared to the Wii and the 360 about a month or two ago....... But now I own all 3 next gen systems and I never thought that the PS3 would be that good, seriously though, I stopped playing my 360 and I rarely play my Wii....... You really have to own them all to know how they all are really....... And I have the 40GB PS3 and it amazes me and I could always upgrade the storage space in it so you could have tons of more space than the 360, but it really depends on the games you like in my opinion....... I don't think that any company failed.......
