Nintendo: Hardcore gamers love Wii

Company claims majority of console owners are male adults

Nintendo has claimed that the typical Wii gamer is as far removed from ‘casual’ as it gets – an adult male with an income of $50,000 or more a year.

At the Electronic Gaming Summit in Napa, California, Nintendo of America's executive VP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway told the crowd that the average Wii gamer is in fact a hardcore gamer.

According to Kotaku, Dunaway said that 79 per cent of Wii gamers are male, with most older than 18 with an income of $50,000 or more.

Whilst these Wii consumers tend to be pretty traditional gamers, the other household members who play Wii aren't, she said.

About 45 percent of other household members who play Wii are female, with 38 percent 25 or older.

"The real break-through, the real magic of the Wii console is that it brought new consumers into the game," she said.

"We in the industry have a choice to make, do we want to appeal to the few or to the masses? Do we want to sell to more people or sell more and more and more to less people? Do we want to be inclusive or do we want to be expansive? At Nintendo we definitely believe in the power of the expanded audience.

"We hope everyone will join us in showing everyone just how much fun video games can be."

... I'm sure there are a lot of hardcore gamers that snapped up the system at the beginning. Remember the hype around Wii Sports? But since then, they've either gone on eBay or are gathering dust.

Mine has been collecting dust all year; even my girlfriend would rather use the ps3.

The problem with the wii is I can always find something else I'd rather play on another console - when you've been at work all day you want to relax and playing on wii just isn't very relaxing.

Hardcore gamers arent measured by their income!

No nintendo, no. A hardcore gamer isnt measured by income I thought it was by the actual amount of gamers they played/played time, infact almost every "hardcore" gamer I know bar one or two nintendo fanatics dont go anywhere near your console as apart from smash bros. or mario kart there is nothing to play for long periods of time.
And the biggest problem of all is that your online service is garbage i'm sorry to say, I really wish it wasnt but no ability to chat with friends, friends lists that do not allow you to invite others to a game or the inability to allow me and my friend to play against anyone in smash bros online is just not on, it was the reason I bought my Wii at launch and after a month or two fo play it happily sat under my tv waiting for smash bros' arrival.
Maybe when you've made the online service much less frustrating you'll see more hardcore gamers like myself coming back.

I've spent enough time, money and borderline obsession on video games to be called a hardcore gamer (as well as a massive nerd!), but no, I do not love the Wii. I loved Nintendo in the past but that's evaporated since the mediocre Wii was launched. I'm sure Nintendo love the money the Wii's making but I think it's the weakest games machine in many years.

If it wasn't for the retro games on Virtual Console, I would've sold my Wii around the launch of the vastly overrated Mario Galaxy.
