HMV: ‘We respect GAME’

Entertainment retail giant says both firms are united in taking on Play and Amazon

HMV has spoken of its respect for specialist GAME in a new interview with MCV.

The firm’s commercial manager for games Jonathan Hayes said that both HMV and GAME were united in offering something that kept consumers away from online retailers – such as Play and Amazon – and supermarkets.

Hayes told MCV:

“I respect GAME for the depth of their specialist offer on the High Street.

“They have faced very similar challenges to that of HMV – being a specialist High Street retailer under threat from the rise of the supermarkets and online retailers such as Amazon and Play.

“HMV and GAME have continued to grow their businesses even with these threats which shows the strength of both brands and the quality of the staff employed in the stores.”

Just a quick question for MCV. When are you actually going to report on GAME's contintued 'falling out' with EA over prices, or MCV not allowed/or are afraid to report GAME in a negative light?

Agreed, it is strange that there's has been no news coverage of this. GAME, Europes largest specialist games retailer in a price disagreement with the biggest games publisher on the planet resulting in the chain only stocking a bare mininum of EA's titles and new releases and MCV, who time and again has made it clear that its first role is to report the news, is seemingly reluctant to cover it?

Curious.

If MCV we're going to cover this story they would of by now, it's been going on for weeks. Always said MCV were in Game's pocket. How much Lisa & Co pay you off to keep a lid on it? LOL

This doesn't go back weeks, it goes back years. I recall From Russia with Love on PS2 being a bone of contention and there only being maybe 2 or 3 copies per store.

Biting the hand that feeds you is a dumb thing to do. It makes perfect sense for MCV to play nice with the big boys... unless you only want stories about Empire Interactive or Oxygen Games and Daves Computer Shop

@ 7

To be fair, MCV are in the business of reporting the news within the industry so your view that they shouldn't 'bite the hand that feeds them' is quite ridiculous. MCV need to report 'all' the news, regardless of who it's about. The fact that this particular piece of news has been ignored thus far, in my view, challenges MCV's integrity.

We shall see.

Would be interesting to know more about this situation, but I have a feeling neither of the key parties in this will want to openly discuss it. Far too much at stake!

@ 9 - Agreed, they should report everything.... but I would suggest they don't want a BBC/ Alex Fergison issue....

Game refused to comment.... EA refused to comment... doesn't make very good reading.

Thats all my point was.

It makes me laugh how the likes of high street stores like HMV, GAME, Woolworths. have been ripping gamers off with their silly prices. Stores say the high prices are due to the publishers/developers, then the publishers/developers say it's the stores that bump up the prices. Stay away from stories, stick with buying online. Today, I bought Burnout Paradise for the Xbox 360, brand new, factory sealed for £19 with the VAT and postage. Why have stores anyway?

@12: I agree that online shopping works out cheaper but thats due to the lack of many overheads that shops have such as rent for a prime spot. Don't be fooled into thinking that online retailers are our saviours though, they are still retailers and they still charge you more for it than they have to.

In business ??

If nobody made any money doing this, then would there be a market or games industry ??
Everyone needs cash to do there bit.... Developers need to pay people, publishers need to cover costs of developement, investment in IP, marketing, finance and distribution. Retail need to pay rent, distribution and staff wages... its the way it is.

Before you all kick off at that statement, I suppose this is a simple ethical question :
What level of profit is acceptable to the gaming society?

Are the fanboys looking for non profit Charitable contributions ??? Hmm maybe.

Unfortunately back in the reall world, the harsh world business means making profit.

@14 I think we're on the same page. Gaming is a luxury and the companies are in business to make money. If you don't like it, then take your money and get another hobby
