Miyamoto: 'My style has changed'

Nintendo legend says that his approach to development has evolved in the past five years

Nintendo development boss Shigeru Miyamoto has said he uses his imagination less in game creation than he did five years ago – leading to more ‘realistic’ software ideas.

Talking to The New York Times, the man behind Donkey Kong, Mario and Wii said that he was “flattered” by comparisons of him to Walt Disney by the newspaper.

“I would say that over the last five years or so, the types of games I create has changed somewhat,” he said.

“Whereas before I could kind of use my own imagination to create these worlds or create these games, I would say that over the last five years I’ve had more of a tendency to take interests or topics in my life and try to draw the entertainment out of that.”

Disney boss Graham Hopper paid tribute to Miyamoto in the piece. He commented:

“There are very few people in the video game industry who have managed to succeed time after time at a world-class level, and Miyamoto-san is one of them.

“The level of creative success that he has achieved over a sustained period is probably unparalleled.”

This guy is undisputedly the top of the pile and one of the very few people I genuinely look up to as a designer. He really is a genius.

The top of a pile of sh.......

Repeat, repeat, repeat. I see NOTHING new in his imagination or inspiration for that matter.

Nintendo won't let go of OLD games and make new ones - nothing is new from them. They're boring and they have a boring concept that's put them out of the hard-core market.

So what next, after all this so-called success in inventing the casual gaming market (and they can keep it, by the way!)?

So will Nintendo go back to hardcore and compete with Sony and Microsoft in the nexgen? Impossible...

Will they carry on in the casual market and release another similar console in the future? If they do, how will it differ? what new frontiers will it reach (if any)? Will it be backwards compatible with the games and peripherals of the current one? If it's just an upgraded, what's the point of it?

Has Myamoto-san thought about these things when he was on the toilet, piling up the sh.. he's in now? Doubt it very much.

Over & Out.

"Nintendo won't let go of OLD games and make new ones - nothing is new from them."

I think maybe you are missing the innovation inside the games. Maybe instead of pointing and saying "oh look another Zelda game" you should pay attention to what new gameplay mechanics have been added. And Wind Waker was pretty innovative visually wasn't it?

Unfortunately innovation rarely sells these days - how many times over does the latest movie-licensed platformer game outsell something like Capcom's Zack and Wiki ?

But having said that, Wii Fit is quite innovative and is outselling even GTA IV in some areas.

It's a shame you don't see anything new in his imagination or inspiration, I feel you may have missed out on the fact that 'hardcore gaming' has evolved a little.

I agree that nintendo are constantly updating their tried and tested games and improving them but it would be nice to see some new IPs from the company itself. They obviously have the talent, it would just take someone to take the risk but seeing as they brought out the Wii I'm sure they are open to one or two risky jumps.
