Wal-Mart slashes Blu-Ray prices

US retailer offering cash-saving incentives on next-gen DVD format to defy credit crunch

Supermarket giant Wal-Mart is offering US consumers some tasty new incentives to splash out on Blu-Ray players.

According to Reuters, the price of Blu-Ray technology is reportedly putting off customers, particularly during the ‘credit crunch’.

Wal-Mart has fought back, however, offering a $100 gift card with the purchase of any Blu-Ray player in-store from June 8th to 14th.

The retailer has also increased the number of brands of Blu-Ray players it is selling, adding Magnavox, Samsung and Panasonic.

In addition, it will be offering select Blu-ray movie titles for $15.

Yeah, this little format war sort of embodied the old adage:

"War doesn't determine who's right ... it determines who's left."

Way to go Walmart! Consumers want a deal on these movies and players. I wonder if the PS3 is included in that $100 gift card promo?

ps... HD DVD is DEAD. R.I.P. - ( thank Microsoft )

Its funny because Sony thinks that they have won the format war, did they forget that plain old dvd is still king and will be for a long long time, consumers drive the next gen, not Sony.
And people will not give up their dvd players anytime soon for a small increase in quality (average joe doesnt see the difference).
Power to the people.................

How it is

Sure DVD sales will continue, but for how lone?? The CRTC is in control of that, and has announced (Almost a year ago) That all TV broadcasts/Movie Formats must all be in High Def... I think that would make the DVD go by-by. Besides that, it was not just Microsofts fault that HD-DVD failed, look at Transformers the Movie.. Serisouly, it DIDNT EVEN HAVE 5.1 SEROUND SOUND!! This was supposed to be the flagship title, to show off the.. I guess benifits of HD-DVD. Even MR. BAY didnt want his movie on HDDVD, and thats FUNNY. Blueray movie says have passed 300 Million sales, I think their doing fine.

Everyone should be forced to study economics and finance before posting.
1) Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players cost about the same to manufacture.
2) Blu-Ray player prices were higher because Microsoft is not subsidizing the manufacturing cost and all manufacturers saw an opportunity to make a profit with early adopters who are willing to pay $400+
3) BluRay discs and regular DVDs cost less than $1 to manufacture. The higher price at the store is because people willing to pay $400+ for a Blu-Ray player will happily fork over an extra few bucks for a far superior movie watching experience on their pricey HDTV and Surround Sound.
4) Stop whining.
