Report in respected business journal Forbes says iPod could cause Nintendo headache

Fresh from Ubisoft adding its name to the list of developers creating games for Apple’s handheld devices, Forbes magazine has claimed that the iPod could ‘kill’ the success of the DS.

The magazine claims that the iPod’s combination of Nintendo’s two USPs – motion sensing and touch-screen technology – could leave the MP3 player as a more desirable format for consumers and developers alike.

The article points to Monday, when it believes Apple boss Steve Jobs ‘will likely launch a long-promised feature, dubbed the App Store, which will let outside developers pour software into the iPhone and iPod Touch’.

The article, which carries the headline ‘Why Apple Could Kill The Nintendo DS’ calls games on iPod ‘a pretty powerful combination’. It reads:

‘Apple is the first to master a pair of tricks that have made Nintendo's latest products so compelling--a touch-screen interface and the ability to pick up on motion.

Pinnacle - Football Director

The key difference: Unlike Nintendo, which has created a gaming console with a motion-sensitive controller and a touch-sensitive handheld gaming system, Apple has crammed both capabilities into its iPhone and iPod Touch…

‘The ability to pour fresh software into the iPhone, wirelessly, at the touch of a button already has game developers interested…

‘Sophisticated games such as Electronic Arts' ambitious Spore are already slated to be released for the iPhone at the same time it goes on sale for PCs, Macs and the Nintendo DS…

‘Looks like the handheld gaming business, so long dominated by Nintendo, could be about to undergo a little evolution too.’

“Developers, Developers, Developers ...”

Apple will need to do more than just provide developers with a "way" of getting their products to the iPhone etc.

Look at the PS3, an incredibly powerful machine, but poor assistance to 3rd party developers has caused so many problems. If Apple put some real enthusiasm behind this and do as much as they can for developers then an Apple could definitely prove to be healthy competition to Nintendo.

If they don't ... then its a very lucrative chance thrown away. Would be a great way for Apple to get into gaming though.

nintendo machines have never been about 3rd party titles they've always succeeded based on the games they create themselves. They could stick Mario on pretty much anything and it would probably sell.

The probably you get when you try and get one system to do everything is it either does one thing well or everything is very average - either way mutliple devices is still the prefered way for consumers.

@ 2 - it's difficult to deny the popularity of ubisofts shovelware on the ds (or wii for that matter). The majority of their output may be shocking, but the demographic they're targeting it at are lapping it up.

It's not just AAA first party titles that have made the ds what it is today by a long stretch of the imagination.

@2: Very true, the DS does a very simple job and executes it very well. If Apple were to give this a go the KISS way of thinking should definetely be in BOLD at the very top of their mission statement.

The whole idea behind calling the article ‘Why Apple Could Kill The Nintendo DS’, is because people know just how unlikely that is to happen. Dream on apple, you only got the mp3 market because sony messed things up.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! Sorry couldn't stop laughing. I am a huge nintendo fan My favourite console right now is the PS3, I own the wii aswell but guitar hero is better on the ps3. Why am i telling you this? Because even sony couldn't hamper the success that nintendo's DS has achieved. I remeber the I-Pod from day one and how faulty it was. I have never had faith in the company and will await the failure that awaits them!

Last time I checked the IPhone was several hundred dollars more expensive and a lot more fragile than
a Nintendo DS.

I am sorry to say this, to all in account but... I have at one time or another, owned all systems. Since then I have wittled my way down to an Xbox360 and an Iphone. I had a Wii but sold it because there just wasn't enough content to play over and over again, although great for parties. Playstation3 just doesn't have enough good support right now. The DS is great and I still own it, but my Iphone I use daily, everywhere I go. I have had no issues with it, except for games and I must say if they added that to all the stuff that the phone already does so well.... I'm sold.

Considering The Game Gear, The Lynx, The PC Engine GT, The Neo Geo Pocket, The N-Gage, The Game.Com, The Gizmondo and even the PSP have been heralded as "Nintendo Handheld killers" in the past as well, I don't see this being much different.
If they can guarantee PROPER games and not frickin' JAVA or Flash ports of console games, they may have a foothold behind Sony.
I wish Apple the best of luck, I just hope they don't severly **** up like they did with the Pippen.

...Oh man, hilarity.

But in all seriousness, this news is only *slightly* frightening, because of how accurate it *could* be. It's all about favouritism people. Johnny McApple is going to rant and rave about this, and more than like buy all of the good games, some of the bad games and continue to worship Mr. Jobs. Sastoshi Nintendo-san is going to condemn the idea, scoff at the elitist Apple consumer, and continue his humble fandomhood towards his DS. But what it boils down to is the game titles.

Like "Guru" Larry Bundy above me said "If they can guarantee PROPER games and not frickin' JAVA or Flash ports of console games, they may have a foothold behind Sony." Heavy emphasis on might there.

I personally don't think Apple can touch Nintendo, due to it's many years in the business, but hey; I've been way off before. I say good luck to Apple because you're going to need it, and a lot of it.

“Ignorance is fanboy bliss”

Comparing the iPhone to the Game Gear, Neo-Geo Pocket et al just shows ignorance of the market. Apple didn't launch a hand-held games machine, it launched a multi-purpose phone (that also happens to be a pocket computer).

While I think it's nonsense to say Apple will dominate this market, to also suggest it will have zero impact is fanboyish optimism. Simply look at iPhone (and don't forget iPod Touch) installed user base and tell me that's not a potential threat...

(Personally, I think PSP is just as vulnerable, if not moreso - after all, it's a much closer comparison in terms of its media capabilities).

In short: the games market is there for Apple and Jobs if they want it hard enough...

“Apple....hard to swallow”
Posted by: ADE_1977 - Jun 6, 2:17pm

Unfortunately for Apple, Nintendo seem to have a sixth sense when it comes to knowing what the handheld market wants; and invariably delivers. I remember reading articles citing the DS as a gimmicky fad and look at the heights it's already achieved in terms of sales and installed users. Good luck to Apple, competition never hurt the market, but i can't help but think it'll be its music playing/downloading abilities that is selling i-pods a year from now not its games.

Question for Apple. Do you have Mario, Zelda, Brain Training and Mario Kart on your system?

Oh, you don't, belt up then.

“Phone contracts?”
Posted by: Doo Lally Lally - Jun 7, 1:09pm

Errr....

The DS doesn't come with a several hundred £ phone contract rip-off from O2 nor does it require being hooked up to another computer or wireless network to get it's games.

May Nintendo should announce a GSM/3G add-on for the DS?

Good grief...

"May Nintendo should announce a GSM/3G add-on for the DS?"

Maybe they should add WPA support to the DS first rather than horrible old, crackable WEP?
