Bach: ‘People won’t pay extra for Blu-Ray’

Bach: ‘People won’t pay extra for Blu-Ray’

Xbox boss questions why consumers would upscale from DVD

Xbox president Robbie Bach has criticised Blu-Ray’s lack of sales success since the HD-DVD format imploded – and questioned why consumers would bother upscaling from DVD.

Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle, Bach also ruled out any possibility of a Blu-Ray enabled Xbox – either in this or the next generation.

Bach said: “If you look at the Blu-ray player market, you haven't seen the acceleration everybody expected (since the demise of HD DVD). It's not as much about whether all the content is in a Blu-ray format or a HD-DVD format.

“You have to look at how fundamentally compelling the difference is between a progressive scan DVD player and the picture that it can produce and what you get on a high-definition player.

"The reality is there is some difference, but most people look at it and say, ‘I am not going to pay extra for that.’”

When asked if Microsoft had Blu-Ray plans for the next-gen Xbox, Bach added:

“No. There is nothing to even talk about right now with regard to the next generation. That is so far out that there isn't anything to talk about.”

I wonder if he'd have said the same thing if it was the other way around (HD-DVD winning the format war). I guess we'll never know now. Although I'm stating to see multi-buy offers on films now with '3 for two' and '2 for £30'.

Those offers aren't so good though. Why would somebody buy 2 Blu-Ray movies for £30 when in stores like HMV, or on web retailers, you can pick up three recent movies for around £20.

Blu-Ray isn't doing as well as it could be because of the high pricing. If that was sorted out, then maybe more people would adopt it.

I just very selective with what I buy on blu-ray. You just don't get the benefit from some films but I'll definatley be picking up things like Indiana Jones but why would you buy the Simpsons on blu-ray?

Although when blu-ray films start having a psp copy on the disc I will buy a lot more.

MS lost the format war so it comes as no suprise that they attack blu-ray at every turn with such transparent comments. Yes, I wonder if Mr Bach would be singing from the same hymn sheet had HDDVD won the format war? I very much doubt it.

Toshiba and the HD DVD group lost the format war, not MS.

Are those 3 recent films for £20 each or for all three? If it's the latter then it is a very good offer. If not...

Yes, I'm aware of that, but MS lost out by backing HDDVD so in a way they did lose the format war. Still doesn't change the fact that Bach would being singing a different tune had HDDVD won the format war.

Blu rays are the same cost to rent as DVD's. I use a postal service and I choose whatever suits at the same price. If I happen to really like something then I might buy. Otherwise i can recommend this as a good way to get into Blu Ray films cheaply

Good at spinning

Bach's comments are like much from Microsoft these days - they blatantly spin the truth to support their view, in such a way as to make it damn close to a lie. Blu-ray player sales figures don't include the PS3, which has been doing pretty well so far this year, and Blu-ray disk sales have actually increased faster than expected, with some new releases taking in more than 10 per cent of sales from Blu-Ray, compared with 2-3 per cent before the end of the format war. I wouldn't be surprised if MS has got some professional spin doctors on its side - its spin is very similar in form and (lack of) substance to that of the two large US political parties, and for me is the one thing that separates it (in a bad light) from Sony and Nintendo. Of course, they both spin, but they don't sledge their opposition in the same petty, political way. What it means, unfortunately, is that it will be harder to tell when MS is or is not talking BS.
