US doctor says guilt caused by addiction to MMOs dwarfs that felt by fans of X-rated material
A leading psychiatrist in the treatment of online game addiction has revealed that some World Of Warcraft users are more ashamed of being addicted to the game than to online porn.
Speaking to The Boston Globe, Dr Jerald Block spoke about the rise in internet addiction and some of the cases he has had to deal with.
He said: “The computer gamers tend to be harder to treat. People feel a lot of shame around computer games. Whereas, it's socially acceptable to have a porn problem.”
Block added: “As a society we understand that porn is something people do, and you can see a psychiatrist and get treated for it. But gaming is hard to describe to anyone else.
“So these people can't explain their situation to friends. In fact, it's hard to give you an example of what my clients talk about, because gaming is enormously complicated.”

Woo Hoo
Its socially acceptable to have a porn problem ... i don't have to go to anymore of those meetings :D
Re: Woo Hoo
Heh, "dwarfs"
:O
I quit wow about 1 month ago, it is an adictive game, I can see why kids might get addicted to it, I've read some really weird articles about the behaviour of people that have it taken away... Then they do call it crack for kids... Best get outside and enjoy the sun instead, or at the very least partake in some chain masturbating, according to Block, its less frowned upon...
@Zildjian
chain masturbating ... lol
Re: @Zildjian
Well, kids shoudln't really be playing it anyway.
The first DAY of playing WOW, I had 3 female elves offer me an orgy (being a gentlemen and new to such wonders I partook of course). Now this is down to the people. But is still part of the game.
Now, should I be more ashamed of Playing WOW, or partaking in Porn in it :D
(I think it is the later ;)

"A leading psychiatrist in the treatment of online game addiction................."
Translation - 4 people specialise in that area and he is 3rd on the list.
“The computer gamers tend to be harder to treat. People feel a lot of shame around computer games. Whereas, it's socially acceptable to have a porn problem.”
Makes a good quote - but I've just checked with the wife and she'd rather I was playing with pixies than with myself.
Re: Re: Re: @Zildjian
Hmm, I dunno.
WOW has never made me uncomfortable looking at my own reflection, and I don't get bi-monthly pangs of anxiety that cause me remove all trace of it from my hard drive post-playing either.
You know what I'm saying.
wtf
In all seriousness, who pays these people to do jobs like this. Clearly i've been wrong all these years, trying to find myself a good honest job when the whole time i could've been just making them up.
"Hi, i'm a dolphin psychologist with a PhD in experimental treatment therapy for three legged dogs ... do you like my porsche" :(
Re: wtf
I'm confident Warcraft's not as shameful as the porn I watch!
Re: Re: wtf
The doctor is only a man with an opinion, that he has studied the subject and has passed some exams to become a Dr hopefully means his IQ is up there at reasonable levels. It does not mean he is any less liable to bias than the rest of society or lack common sense, I do not know the man so cannot comment. I am in my mid fifties, making vid games since I was 29 (as well as running numerous other companies so not insular), and have also studied psychology. I also have fours sons aged between 33 and 9. None have been addicted to games yet have had free access most of their lives; why? Because I/we have always provided alternative forms of entertainment to compete. Have been more likely to have to pull em in from playing Football in the dark, or in teens from Girls, hardly ever from a video game. It is currently popular and gains notoriety BASHING video games. The parallel with hard core Porn/Sex is an abomination designed to do nothing more than gain notoriety and a bigger pay check (OH THAT FAMOUS DOCTOR?). That is MY OPINION, 2nd - 3rd - 4th +++ opinions most welcome...
Re: Re: Re: wtf
the doctor is most likely commenting on the addiction under a freudic perspective, thus as he personaly enjoys/understands porn more than WoW he insists that porn addiction is more socially acceptable than playing online games.
on a sidenote i believe MMO addiction exists and can sometimes harm a person's social life and career. It is cured by time, as no MMO is perfect and any game can get really boring after a couple of years. Not only that, but after getting over the addiction once, the thril will never come back massively. (you can get addicted to a new online game for a month or two, but thats it). What is often described by gamers as the 'golden years' of WoW or SWG or UO is actually the 'golden years' of their personal addiction. the games have not worsened after a couple of years, but their personal gaming experience has.
to conclude, if you think you should get over your MMO addiction go play more WoW instead of wasting time with your psychiatrist. There is no OD in WoW. or in fact the OD is what you should aim for, as it will help you get sick and tired of the game faster.
Re: Re: Re: Re: wtf
hahaha - you're right, he's justifying his obsession with porn by saying WoW is worse... He probably has 3 wow accounts...
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: wtf
But porn is just made up and World of Warcraft is REAL!!!
I'm a wizard.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: wtf
the main problem with PRON is it slows down my ping whilst playing WOW :)

I was definitely very embarassed when my mom caught me whacking off to WOW the other day.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: wtf
