Problem caused by graphics chip, according to design conference
The reason behind Xbox 360’s product recall may have finally been fully explained.
Speaking at the Design Automation Conference in California this week, Bryan Lewis, research vice president and chief analyst at Gartner, said that the problem started in a graphic chip.
According to the EE Times, Microsoft designed the graphic chip on its own, cut a traditional ASIC vendor out of the process and went straight to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd – a move to save millions of dollars.
Lewis added that to fix the problem, Microsoft went back to an unnamed ASIC vendor based in the United States and redesigned the chip.
"Had Microsoft left the graphics processor design to an ASIC vendor in the first place, would they have been able to avoid this problem?” asked Lewis.

"Probably. The ASIC vendor could have been able to design a graphics processor that dissipates much less power."
Microsoft did not respond to requests from the EE Times’ to comment on the story.

What?!
Who writes this rubbish? ATI designed the graphics chip for Microsoft, and the main problem causing RROD appears to be uneven force applied to the chips via the heatsink. The root of this is a mechanical problem, as are most failures on modern electronics (which end up causing dry joints on the PCB).
RROD
Whatever the reason for the RROD, it has cost MS a great deal to repair faulty machines. It was forced to extend its warranty to 3 years to avoid an impending PR disaster It has also tested customer loyalty; after little play-time my 360 experienced the RROD. It happened again a week after it was repaired following 2 hours further play. The 360 is a poorly designed machine that sounds like a hoover in use i.e like a PC. When I can it's no wonder that I choose a PS3 version of a multi-platform game.
Re: RROD
I bought a brand new elite, and it red ringed on power up. I hadn't even entered my name into it!
I have bought another elite (will be my third one, my first died after only 3 months) and am happy with it so far, although it does gets ridiculously hot.
funnily enough when my first elite died at xmas, i borrowed by old premium from my brother (used to be mine and was bought oct 06), and that died that week! both by playing mass effect. So I had no xbox for xmas :(
Glad they have fixed teh issues, as I am very disappointed with the quality of the console, especially the elite.
Re: Re: RROD
This is waffle. Andy has it down to a T.
An ex microsoft employee spoke of this a few months back and while never confirmed by microsoft his reasons behind it were technically sound.
@3: They haven't solved it, and this article is about a guy named Bryan Lewis, he isn't associated with MS and it says MS didn't comment. They will fix it but only within their current business model which is to continually renew and reproduce the 360 using better components but each time its only getting marginally better.
In saying that my 360 has never RRODed on me, I'd like to think its because i keep it well ventilated and don't play it as often as i could (or would like to). But then again it could happen 2mara when i switch it on :( still love it though.
Re: Re: Re: RROD
inacurate headline as there has been no product recall.
Re: Re: Re: RROD
I have a 26 month old 360 that has never RR'd but has had a new laser module. It has been chucked in a car boot and driven to other houses, knocked over, played vertically, played horizontally, opened up and modded by myself (fan & RAM heatsinks), dropped again, play use is 25-30 hrs week. I now have a new 360 (cooler & quieter) and have them linked over the LAN. Nobody I know has ever had RROD. So are we some of the lucky ones?
Headline
hmm i'm not 100% but i could've sworn this headline has been changed. I thought the original title (if there was one lol) was more accurate.
