Xbox global marketing boss leaves Microsoft

Jeff Bell will continue to work with firm throughout summer; exec set to ‘pursue passion outside entertainment’

Microsoft’s corporate VP of global marketing Jeff Bell is to leave the company at the end of the summer.

In the interim – while Microsoft searches for Bell’s replacement – his team of Matt Barlow, Charlotte Stuyvenberg and Jim Merrick, will take up his responsibilities and carry forward global marketing initiatives for the firm.

Microsoft VP of Interactive Entertainment Business in Europe Chris Lewis told MCV that Bell would now pursue a career outside entertainment.

“Jeff is a passionate consumer brand marketing guy and we wish him every success,” said Lewis. “He’s comes from a mix of rich experiences – and he wants to pursue that passion outside of the entertainment industry.

“It’s another chapter for a great guy who brought a new way of thinking to what we do.

“We’ll start the executive search process for Jeff’s replacement soon. We’re hoping to make announcements leaders that work with Jeff right now will step into the breach.”

Bell added: “The time is right for me to pursue my life’s passion of consumer brand marketing and the creative and services that drive it. Coming from automotive, and now technology and entertainment, I am excited to expand to new industries and categories.”

Microsoft has also today announced two high profile promotions in its studios business.

Err, hello?

“The time is right for me to pursue my life’s passion of consumer brand marketing..."

Seems a strange life passion to have.

I look like that in moments of passion too.

How does he look dead inside ? What are you guys talking about ?
All I can see is a man full of a burning, unbridled passion for consumer brand marketing.

I was expecting him to have a passion for playing upsidedown guitar with his tongue and to therefore become a rock star...

...I'm disappointed.

Xbox 360 sales are begining to wane in every territory, (epsecially the UK & Europe), with no indication of unit sale picking up again, and the Xbox 360 is a comercial disaster in the east, so it's only natural that Jeff Bell would want to leave the sinking ship.

Newsflash: sales are waning because nobody needs two xbox's. I like many other ppl have already bought an xbox seeing as its been out for about 3 years. Obviously sales are going to drop when everyone who wants one buys it DUH! You should try looking at the install base for 360's.

PS3 is selling more because it only came out last march (5 months late) so its still a relatively new machine.

As for a commercial disaster? Just leave, and take your fanboyism with you. The 360 has sold over 10 million consoles, if thats a commercial failure then does that mean the PS3 is aswell seeing as it hasn't hit the big 10 yet?

You are entitled to your opinion, but don't use false facts to try and make your reasoning seem more profound.

To be fair, ka0znrky, you came off looking a bit of a fanboy yourself with that rant.

I think that rant was completely justified - but then again I think the fanboys do post stuff like that just to provoke such reactions - maybe the best solution is to just ignore them, and let the moderators delete such comments. You will never win an argument against a fanboy - not because they are right, but because they only have one eye.

I've noticed less idiot fanboys and more trade people on here recently. Could we be winning the fight?! Is MCV perhaps clamping down on them? Anyway, long may it continue...

My rant wasn't coming from the perspective of a fanboy, it was from someone who reads a trade website and doesn't appreciate when someone throws a term like "commercial disaster" into their comment without realising that 90% of the people who read this site actually understand what that means and when it applies, or more importantly when it doesn't apply.

@Bill K: yeah i think ps3fan is the first i've seen since the gta launch. tbh i was expecting them all to come out this week with MGS4 being released but things are looking up.

Regarding ka0znrky comment"Newsflash: sales are waning because nobody needs two xbox's" the thing is most people have had more than 1 xbox thanx to rrod ( red rings of death) adn that has given them some very bad rep. microsoft are good at making games not consoles where as sony are the opposite, i only can dream of a console made by sony and the games made by microsoft then all our problems will be solved!!

I dont think Ka0znrky's rant was unjustified but perhaps a little misunderstood following the other posts......

And yes, Jeff Bell does look like a freak.

Almost like some sort of robotic doll that was made by Microsoft to hide the fact that it was actually a computer that was behind all their marketing......
