Shane Kim: ‘We don’t have a new game as big as Halo 3’

But Fable 2 and Gears Of War 2 will do the job nicely in 2008, says newly promoted exec

Microsoft’s newly-promoted corporate VP of entertainment strategy and business development Shane Kim has admitted that Xbox 360 doesn’t have an exclusive as big as Halo 3 this year – but put his faith in Gears Of War 2 and Fable 2 to enjoy "huge" sales.

Kim said he expected Xbox 360 to enjoy “just as big of a year” as it did in 2007.

Speaking to Next-Gen, Kim commented:

“I think the platform is just as strong, if not stronger [than last year]. That’s hard to say, because we had incredible titles last year with BioShock, Halo 3, Mass Effect and Call of Duty 4. … Especially when you look at Halo 3, which was a phenomenal industry event, it’s easy to look back and go ‘you can’t possibly be as strong.’

“But if you look at the initial success of Grand Theft Auto IV on Xbox 360, that’s been super, and we have exclusive [DLC] content coming too. Gears of War 2 is going to be huge, Fable 2 is going to be huge.

“So I don’t know. I believe that we’re going to have just as big of a year in terms of content on Xbox 360. Maybe we don’t have a particular exclusive that’s as big as Halo 3, but I do think that Gears 2 and Fable 2 will be really big hits.”

@DM: While i'd love to see Gears 2 do really well i think mr Kim is just being realistic about this. Gears will sell like a mofo but beating Halo will be hard work as its a relatively new game compared to Halo and its still gaining fans whereas when Halo 3 launched it was at its peak.

I love gears and Im sure gears 2 will be amazing too but I would of liked to of seen something orginal and amazing come out this year and it was a 360 exclusive maybe something that they can carry onto the next generation of console and do what Halo did from the Xbox to the 360 still waiting though for that new killer game to shift even more consoles im sorry but gears 2 wont shift more consoles people buy the game will already have a 360 because you cant really appreciate the second one without playing the first gears of war

Oh I liked Gears of War too, but that last boss was really really annoying! I hope Gears of War too won't be tested only in co-op mode. Gereral Ram was way too hard too bring down in solo mode and that took the shine off G.O.W. slightly for me.

Gears 2 is going to be great, but so far it all seems a little underwhelming, and dare i say it, more of the same. They need to push it to a new audience and explore other ways of encouraging in new gamers. The problem with it enjoying a console for real gamers rep. is that it will be considered niche. Fable 2 will be awesome, but will never achieve success unless they can convince a new audience that this is what they NEED in their lives.

Welll Halo 2 and 3 didn't exactly rewrite the book and include a Sudoku level for casual gamers and they still sold meeelions. More of the same but tweaked has been a money making safety net for games and movies for years.
