Bach: Zune ‘more compelling’ than iPod

Xbox President says D-pad makes device a better gaming system than rival

President of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Group Robbie Bach has called Zune a “more compelling” gaming proposition than Apple’s iPod.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs this week revealed a slate of new games for iPod and iPhone, whilst Microsoft has as yet remained quiet on Zune’s gaming capabilities.

However, Bach told Venture Beat:

“We didn’t demo games running on some big service because there isn’t some big service to announce. But the idea is that Zune does music, video, photos, and it has the hardware to do very compelling games on it.

"It is more compelling than an iPod because it actually has a D-pad. From a gaming perspective, it is reasonably well suited. You can read a little or read a lot into it. The point is that we think of it as a portable entertainment device.”

In the interview, Bach also said that Microsoft had learned “cautionary tales” from Sony’s experiences with PSP.

This guy is a tool.

So the Zune would be a much better gaming device than the ipod ... IF it had games, had a gaming service planned and if it WAS a gaming device.

You shouldn't be allowed to market products based on what they could do ... my car could fit 10 people in it IF someone fitted another 5 seats lol

I get his point but he shouldn't really be having a go at Apple when he's got nothing to back it up with, atleast they are doing something.

Really - like as also saying that X-BOX doesn't need blu-ray, Microsoft was happy to support HD-DVD. These people tell use to be happy with a second rate products and think we are dumb, they are the ones living in cloud nine.

lets face it, he aint gonna come out and say 'oh yeah, ours is massively inferior to the current market leader. I don't know why we bothered'

Its like when you sell someone a copy of Turninmg Point. 'Oh yes sir, it's brilliant. One of the biggest over stocks. erm. I mean games'

I'd say (this is a complete guess with no purpose other than statistics sound cool lol) about 60% of the reason why most people hate or dislike a company/brand is due to the marketting people or the choices they make.

If this guy would stop his gums flapping maybe MS would be a little more liked (not much but a little).

Don't get me wrong I undersand the idea of any publicity is good publicity BUT that doesn't apply to retail because its only good publicity thats going to make me part with my hard earned cash. Being all talk with nothing to back it up is doing them no favours ... in fact i'm currently looking at what games will be available on ipods and iphones lol ... unless he works for Apple he is failing at his job.

Waste of time and money

I am amazed that companies continue to invest money in producing devices that do a range of things poorly. I own a PSP and think its an excellent gaming platform, lacking internal memory is only a minor issue, it still plays music and and i could watch movies on it if i really wanted to but I bought it to play games on.
The Zune looks like a piece of crap, some ipod psp cross breed that omg!!!!! has an fk'in dpad!! Ok great so as a gamer i should perhaps now consider getting one and throwing my PSP away.
Oh but look....the games are ****, the controls are too small, awkward and barely improve on a mobile phone gaming experience. But it plays music!!! oh brilliant, so does my phone, my psp, my ipod, i dont need another bloody device that plays a cheap version of space invaders with absolutley no potential to play proper PSPesq games because i have a bloody PSP.
Games should be crossed of your selling points for this product your already 4 years behind, a Dpad does nothing for me especially when I could get a better gaming experience out of a Gameboy.
