In-game XMB and Trophies confirmed for PS3

Much-awaited gaming functionality finally on the way for Sony’s blossoming console in upcoming firmware update 2.40

Sony has now officially confirmed that its latest PS3 firmware update, versions 2.40, will indeed include both access to the in-game XMB and Sony’s take on Xbox 360 Achievements – known as Trophies.

The XMB (or cross-media-bar) is essentially the PS3’s user menu. Currently, users are forced to quit out of any game they are playing to access it. However, with an in-game XMB gamers will have the option to access features such as Friends lists and MP3s whilst playing PS3 titles.

Few official details about Trophies have been made available to date. However, much like Microsoft’s successful Xbox 360 Achievements, Trophies are expected to be rewarded for accomplishing certain in-game tasks, and will likely to associated with a player’s online PSN profile.

A post on the official US PlayStation blog states:

“We’re happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include XMB access in-game. The update will also include Trophies, an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements.”

It's only been a year. Wonder if they'll release a list of already released titles that will work alongside the new Trophy system?

fantastic, 2008 and the functionality from xbl circa 2005 is added, maybe if we hang on until 2010 they'll implement the rest of it.

@ MrJolly

Maybe this is the page your looking for:

http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/" onclick="window.open ( this.href ); return false;" class="comment_url" >http://www.xbox360....com/

While the 360 offers an excellent online service I'm sure PS3 owners are looking forwards to their own online achievements.

Ahahahaha - cliche!

As I said, maybe they'll get round to implementing the rest of it in another couple of years, or are you saying that the live element of the ps3 isn't in dire need of more features to enhance the experience?
Even the posters on the 3speech blog want the online gaming improved and are pretty vocal about it.

I personaly expect more from a company such as sony that has the in-company expertise from years of sucessful on online gaming such as Planetside and Everquest, simply shouting fanboy at anyone who points out Sonys faults and issues isn't a retort.

Maybe your second post should have been your first.

It was a LOT more sensible and it was less likely to get a 'fanboy' shout back (which I don't like to do). I think we both learned a lesson there...

Think before you type.

maybe you shouldn't just throw fanboy around as a lazy catch all remark, you got a snappy post from myself - it's not my fault you assume anyone who mentions that a company could do better is a fanboy for their opposition.

As I said , maybe they'll get the rest of the functionality down in 2010, their fanbase is underwhelmed at their progress but anyone who reads anything that actual ps3 users post rather than blinkered fanboys will know that and there's hardly a reason to recap that.

maybe you shouldn't rush to judgement?
