Corporation boss points to games as ‘top priority’
Sony Corp. chairman Howard Stringer has said the company's top management priority is “to restore profitability in our television and game businesses.''
Stringer made the comment at Sony's annual shareholder meeting in Tokyo yesterday.
Last month, Sony predicted its games division is set to its first annual profit in three years after reducing the cost of manufacturing PlayStation 3s.
According to Bloomberg, the PlayStation division lost $3.4 billion in the past two years under Stringer.

games, games, games ...
While thats a lot of money to lose but i'm sure a big portion of it was to be expected by Sony. The problem is that now is the time for the "avalanche" of games to arrive. With PS3 consoles selling faster than ever this is really the time to capitalise and if Sony don't have a game-filled xmas season they could lose a lot of fans/customers especially the ones who forked out the big money at the launch for their machines.
IMO this xmas could make or break the PS3
Re: games, games, games ...
Man, I would love to agree with you KaOznrky but as Sony has said for years, 'do not underestimate the power of playstation'.
Obviously they were talking about their brand (as they havent released any games that could back up that statment in terms of actual games output) and thats what upsets me.
Indeed, this christmas SHOULD make or break Sony but we all know that there are far too many people out there that will swallow whatever crap Sony gives them and then run around town telling everyone its the best crap they've ever had and that no one else has crap as good as theirs. Obviously to them, crap means good.
Just look at the current state of console sales and my point is proven. Sony have done really well in recent months despite providing nothing whatsoever to justify buying a PS3.
If you take GT5 and blue-ray playback out of the equation, there is nothing in my eyes that would make me want to buy that machine and I cant understand why so many people have supported it in light of whats happening on Wii and 360.
The only thing I can put it down to is brand loyalty and faith.
People have bought the PS3 with the belief that no matter how bad things are now, just give it time and everything will come good. The thing is, for them, it will. It doesnt matter when, or what it is thats on offer but it will be just what they want and will be the kind of crap they've been waiting so long for.
For these people, It doesnt matter what the rest of the industry is doing or what advances are being made, they just want whatever Sony gives them, whenever Sony is ready to give it and in that world, nothing else matters.
How many people have you seen posting on this website saying things like 'PS3 has better games' and 'PS3 has better graphics'.
WTF?
Who in their right mind would say stuff like that?
I'm so confused. ???
I really hope you're are right cos it would give Sony a kick up the ass and then maybe we could all genuinely go back to not underestimating the power of playstation.
Re: Re: games, games, games ...
Yeah I'm hoping this will be the straw that breaks the camels (PS3 fans NOT fanboys) backs. You're right, they have been all talk so far, and have mostly seemed like a company that is not quite sure what direction they want to go with the PS3.
MS went straight for online gaming, Wii went for casual/family orientated gaming but Sony seem stuck between "is our machine for games or is it for playing movies". And i've always been a firm believer that no matter what functionality you want to add to your gaming console you must never forget that its a gaming machine first ... everything else is just a nice little bonus.
