Latest Wii firmware blocks homebrew and Freeloader

Wii menu 3.3 removes homebrew files and stops region-free gaming as Nintendo confronts pirates

It seems that Nintendo has decided to take action on the growing homebrew Wii community following news that its latest update to the Wii’s firmware (version 3.3) removes files associated with ‘unauthorised modifications’ from users’ machines, according to Joystiq.

In addition, GoNintendo reports that it also seems that firmware 3.3 renders Datel’s Freeloader, a piece of software that allows Wii owners to play games from any region on any machine, completely inoperable.

Nintendo has to date remained tight-lipped concerning its feelings about Datel’s region-hacking Freeloader device, but this latest move seems to confirm its thoughts.

Wii’s increased emphasis on internet connectivity gives Nintendo more tools with which to combat the Wii piracy movement – something that is thought to be rampant in the DS (and PSP) market.

For now . . . . . .

One thing hackers love, as history has unfortunately shown, is a war and an on-going challenge.

Wii Fit Sucks

So everyone who went out and legally bought a copy of Smash Bros from the states and a prefectly legal copy of freeloader will have to buy Smash Bros all over again?

I think we all know who the real pirates are here.

I appreciate that a company like nintendo doesn't want to lose revenue through piracy but when the guys hacking your machine are doing more in their free time than the developers making ur games (thats right Carnival: Fun Fair Games i'm looking at you) it seems a bit sad as the hackers will probably push the wii to its limits long before (if ever) the guys making the games do.

Is there another solution than freeloader?
Will the next Wii firmware upgrade enable freeloader again?
Does anyone know?

Certainly the non-release of certain titles in certain territories is the most compelling argument for console augmentation - but it's unquestionably "too bad" for you if your Wii isn't online as you're missing out on some great functionality. I definately wouldn't deprive myself of that just for the ability to play a handful of foreign releases.

In essence Ben, you highlight the difference between "hardcore" and "casual" gamers. The hardcore gamers will sacrifice fuctionality in order to play games.

They value the ability to play games from any region above virtually everything else. I would happily give up the PSN to play my now useless NTSC Shadow of the Colossus.

World Domination

Some conformists are content with being dominated by corporate companies who make a product the way they want, while still charging the price they want. And they use marketing schemes to make us think we want it. Well, some people can call that a violation of its own. Exploitation, manipulation, etc etc.

But its fair game. The same goes for music, movies, and whatever else. Paying $50 for a game is robbery. The mere existence of piracy isnt because "we can". People are generally loyal and giving to those who arent greedy. If Nintendo lowered their prices, things would be different.

People pirate movies because most modern movies are garabage and not worth a ticket sale. Also, hesitating to release programs that people spend years begging for is unacceptable. Even worse, they release something after breaking it. Shame on Hollywood, especially WB!!

Everyone already knows about the mafia ran music industry. Screw them. They deserve to go bankrupt COMPLETELY to allow creative control to revert back to musicians like it used to be. Keep popping out the MP3s!!

Finally, when I was a kid, I was damn lucky to get a single game to put into my Vectrex or Colecovision. Today, its no different. Except that kids, and some grownups, waste valuable assets on overpriced games that senselessly rot their minds. And I dont like it that game makers have sold out to allowing nonsense games like Biggest Loser, Wii Fit, and essentially non-beneficial games with no plot other than to perform another gimmick. I call them infomercial games.

It looks to me that Capitalism is getting an ass reaming and thats a good thing!! The open source community has already shown us what technology is supposed to be. It may seem less significant than commercial technology. But that is only because the more brilliant inventors out there feel like they deserve to be well bought sell-outs. There's no loyalty.

But I say, bring down the corporations and create the balance that has been long overdue.
