Sony Entertainment Online boss John Smedley tells MCV all about PSN
SOE President John Smedley has told MCV that PS3 is the ‘perfect platform’ for developing MMOs on a console.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Smedley said:
“Probably the biggest thing we can bring to the table is just the experience of having operated an online gaming service for many years.
“We’re happy to roll up our sleeves and offer assistance anywhere we are needed. We love making online games and we think PS3 is the perfect platform for doing that.”

SO FUNNY
“Probably the biggest thing we can bring to the table is just the experience of having operated an online gaming service for many years. “We’re happy to roll up our sleeves and offer assistance anywhere we are needed. We love making online games and we think PS3 is the perfect platform for doing that.”
That is so funny it sounds like a pitch from "The Apprentice" from one of the candidates that are obviously not going to win, so try the "I'll try hard, roll up my sleaves and love doing it" card.
The biggest thing they can bring to the table is there experience of operating an online service? Is Playstation Home out now then? I thought the market leader online was XBOX live.
Re: SO FUNNY
Stop being a fanboy. The PS2 had online, remember?
Re: Re: SO FUNNY
What made you write what you did? Just out of curiosity.
Re: Re: Re: SO FUNNY
Xbox Live sucks is full of cheaters and laggers and mostly empty lobbies and no clan support.
Sony
They will be talking about SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) which has been running MMO's for years, longer than Xbox Live has been around.
Sadly is has screwed up most of them, Star Wars Galaxies the most. So that mostly SOE is just known now for starting with a half finished not ready for release game and then using patches to slowly make it worse.
This isn't a post from an Xbox fanboy I have played most of the SOE MMO's and suffered at their inept hands myself.
Re: Sony
Everybody seems to think an MMO is a guaranteed cash cow.
A SUCCESSFUL MMO certainly is, but not every MMO.
Sony/MS need to ensure they have the right established user base before hoping to launch an MMO - would this cost on what is currently a free of charge PSN ?
Would an MMO on XBox Live cost extra? Probably to both.
Didnt MS recently cancel their superhero MMO (Marvel I think) - this was quashed as they didnt see it as viable - if you cant make a superhero MMO work, then you are going to struggle.
It is all good and well for Sony to puff their chest and say they can do it, but they need to consider much more than just rolling up their sleeves.
Re: Re: Sony
Sadly, Sony isn't the "perfect developer" for MMOs.
Re: Re: Re: Sony
I wonder if they forgot about the PC? How is the PS3 going to compete with that in the MMO market?
Saying it's the perfect platform would indicate that it's got something a cut above the rest but what does the PS3 have that the PC and XBOX hasnt already got?
The MMO market is built for companies that can allow their games to grow alongside their business (Jagex, CCP, Blizzard) starting off with a small development team and close community / fan base in to something much larger powered by the quality of the game and a passion for getting it right.
I can imagines Sony's idea will be to pump a load of money in to something with a brand name, a quick TV advert and then sit there and wait.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Sony
I assume he's talking about Sony-Online-Entertainment?
The company thats infamous for buying and ruining MMOs?

Re: Sony Perfect MMO
Maybe they'll wake up and smell the Blizzard. Now if WoW suddenly makes an appearance, then the MMO world might wake up and take notice.
Jestor Here
Utter Asshatery, John Smedly and his Associaties have gone out of their way to disreguard over 20ok customers with the New game edition of Star Wars Galaxies. The game is all but dead now and I exist to see the plug pulled. Love Star Wars , Hate what SOE did to a great game. I have alot to say about this -
