Developer Treyarch tells MCV about its lofty ambitions for Call Of Duty: World At War
The studio behind Call Of Duty: World At War has told MCV that it is looking to make no less than “the best game of all time”.
In an exclusive interview, Treyarch creative boss Richard Farrelly (pictured) also explained why the developer decided to take the fifth title in the COD series back to a World War II setting after the success of Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
“We knew we had to approach the WWII genre different as it was getting a little stretch,” Farrelly told MCV.
“We had to hit the reset as to what people would expect from it. We took a lot of tips from the success of Modern Warfare, in terms of how they presented the game, the pacing, the different approach for the music and the way the characters speak in the game… right down to the level of maturity of the content. Which really sets a different tone for any WWII game.”
He added: “We put a lot of pressure on ourselves. But a two year cycle now enables us to test the game and make sure what goes in the game is real quality. We want to make the best game ever made.”
GAME customers have just voted CoD4: Modern Warfare the greatest game ever released.

COD5 The best game ever!!
I say bloody go for it, since I had COD4 I have hardly touched another game. COD4 has defined gaming history in my eyes. Being an old gamer it's a complete breath of fresh air when you get games of this calibre come along and blow everything else out the water.
Keep up the great work Activision!!!!
I'll have plenty of room on my shop shelves for COD5 when it arrives!!! :O)
Re: COD5 The best game ever!!
please, no... not more WW2... keep it modern! please!
Re: Re: COD5 The best game ever!!
There was me thinking we had had finally moved on. WW2 has been done to death and to have it redone once again by Treyarch ... well can't wait for COD6 because COD5 will never be seeing the inside of my xbox.
The level of detail and polish you get from a team like infinity ward is what made COD4 what it is. Treyarch will do what they do best and butcher it...again!
COD had finally taken a natural evolution, it was the right time to bring it to the modern age, it worked, it was executed to perfection. Treyarch talk a lot, but talking does make great games.
At least the multiplayer wont be flawed
I look forward to COD5 for the multiplayer as the tech behind it was set just right with client side hit detection and not server side like most online games.
Sure COD4 online was fun until a few americans turned up and switched the host to the US which then ruined that lobby with extra latency.
People whine about how we should move away from the old hat that is WW2 and go to modern era, but I can guarantee you a couple more years and people will whine about how modern combat has been done to death, and then the cycle will start over again of changing the timeline.
Re: At least the multiplayer wont be flawed
WW II theme based FPS's are here to stay. Suggest we all get over it. The theatre within WW II may change however. Don't see it mentioned here, but am sure I have heard earlier that COD5 will be based in the Pacific theatre and we wont be shooting Nazi's this time around.
I admit the modern warfare take was different and worked well - but that is because it was done well. If the game is developed to a high standard, I am not too bothered where it is set. What worries me is that it is Treyarch this time round (as the COD cycle always goes) who do not have a good history. But, we shouldn't be whining about where they base the game, because if they do butcher it like has been suggested, it wont matter if it is sent 60 years in the past, or 60 years in the future. They might pull it off.....
Re: Re: At least the multiplayer wont be flawed
why not a vietnam themed game? Or is it to touchy since we lost?
Re: Re: Re: At least the multiplayer wont be flawed
I don't know why a Vietnam themed game wouldn't be popular. It's not like we lost any battles.
For those of you saying that Treyarch will butcher this game, please be aware that they will be given 2 years to butcher the game this time versus only 8 months to "butcher" COD3.
Re: Re: Re: At least the multiplayer wont be flawed
Yes WWII has been done so many times, but I generally believe Treyarch are going to pull something off with this. It looks quite good, and i'll be watching this carefully. They are trying to do something with the WWII genre that hasn't been done before. It could fail miserably, But based on previews etc, I think they might have something up their sleeves with this.
Re: Re: Re: Re: At least the multiplayer wont be flawed
i dont think so not WW2 gosip on live is it will be crap if not got modern guns ,,,battlefield bad company is right way to go
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: At least the multiplayer wont be flawed
Vietnam era would be nice, Men of Valor was an excellent vietnam era pc game.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: At least the multiplayer wont be flawed
personally, there's only so far you could go with modern warfare. i think that was a great transition but it closes the door for future cod games. from looking looking at the trailer, cod 5 looks way darker than cod 4 was so i'm excited.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: At least the multiplayer wont be fla
COD4 was not even that great a game for singleplayer. I am sure the multiplayer was great, but the singleplayer demo put me off. It was exactly the same as the older COD games but with pretty graphics.
This will be awful, as the only thing that tempted me with COD4 was the modern setting. WW2 is over done. Unless you can actually play a different type of character (bomber, bomb disperal expert, or something else) then this will just be the same game that I played 5 years ago.
@12
COD4's single player was good because it had depth, unlike a lot of other FPS and especially war games. It really pushed the boat out in terms of content, its a very short single player but it beats the hell out of 16 hours of repetitive or mediocre gameplay.
I do agree with you though when it comes to the WW2 setting. With Modern Warfare they gave the series a fresh setting and i think its a real shame that they aren't exploring that setting more in COD5 as it was a real breath of fresh air. Hopefully infinity ward will continue the MW setting with COD6
Re: @12
Thats my boy
Re: Re: @12
I cant trust treyarch after what they did in cod 3. Just give em some spider man or tony hawk games to work on, and let infinity ward deal with the cod series
Re: Re: Re: @12
Has anyone actually watched the trailer ? I think there are some interesting things that can be explored in here...that's if Treyarch are capable.
Re: Re: Re: Re: @12
I cant believe COD4 was voted greatest game ever. I mean its good, but not even top 5 imo. Musta been a lot of real young gamers voting.
I am, personally, excited for this game. Big time. They seem very passionate about it, to prove the haters/dumbass modern warfare fanboys wrong.
@ 13
have you played the game yet no so shout the hell up saying that its going to suck and ill never play it just because is ww2. a lest rent when it comes out.
Hi !!!!!!!! COD5=gona b class
Is cod5 gona have trophys, wens it out, cant wait !!!!!!!!!
:) :) :) :) :) :)
Whats up
i guess we will see what treyarch can pull off but i do agree that infinity ward should stick with the COD series
