Sony: PSP can last ten years

Sony Europe exec reveals all about firm's strategy to 'revitalise' console developers

Sony has revealed that it is backing a ten-year plan for its PSP console – with networking playing a key role in its futute.

The firm believes that it needs to ‘revitalise’ the development community to get behind creating games for PSP in order to make it fulfil its potential.

Zeno Colaco, VP of publisher and developer relations for Sony Europe told Pocket Gamer:

“We definitely have the ambition for it to feature very strongly in the future, both on its own and also complimentary to PlayStation Network environment and the PS3. But we'll have to wait a while before we can fully reveal the direction we're going in. Ten years is certainly the long-term plan though.”

He added:

“We need to revitalise the developer community to get behind PSP.

“For example, it's easy to make a DS-type game for a PSP game in terms of cost and speed of development and we will be looking to do encourage that as we continue to develop the PSP. I'm not just talking about the hardware but the services and the business models and the support, too.

“Our sales for PSP is over 37 million units, which is huge, particularly when you take into account the level of third-party sales there are for PSP compared to DS.

“So from my perspective, what's important is we continue to tell publishers and developers that there's an opportunity to make money on PSP, which is something that will become apparent over the next two years as the network services are developed.”

Died after 2 years?
The PSP has been outselling the DS in Japan by 20,000 a week , for the past 7 months at least, even as DS sales in Japan have fallen sharply from their previous levels. The PSP should be selling in high numbers for quite a few uears to come.

Think the sales speak for themselves. There is a definate opportunity with PSP but the trouble is that its a jack of all trades and a master of none. And innovative new features we've been hearing about - like the sat nav option - take so long to reach market that other handheld devices (Nokia phones etc) beat them to it.
I love my PSP but haven't used it since God of War and before that game it was LocoRoco!

@3

It's a shame that the PSP isn't quite as popular here as it is in other territories, (like the East), but it still sells regardless of what the naysayers might think.

not in the uk it doesn't.... japanese sales mean nothing over here i'm afraid.

'lets expand the psp range, its huge in japan' isn't something you'll hear from uk retail

I think you'll find that world sales are important to Sony, not just the UK so your comment that 'japanese sales mean nothing over here' is utterly irrelevant. Having said that the PSP is a steady seller for us and the release of the Final Fantasy VII limited edition set as seen a spike in our PSP sales output.

The demand is there, you' just have to know how to deliver it, which given your remarks you clearly don't.

I disagree, I think these days, overall, Japanese sales dont really mean anything over here. Apart from things like Brain training and Wii fit etc

I wish Japanese sales did mean something over here cos Okami would be doing well, the Dreamcast wouldnt have died so early in its life and the Christmas games charts wouldnt be dominated by crappy titles from EA.

Oh and I'd also be able to buy Haruhi Suzumiya, Taiko No Tatsujin, Initial D and Bleach 5 for my PSP from HMV in Oxford street.

Sigh......(frustrated)

If Japanese sales mean anything in the UK, then someone please explain whats gone wrong with sales on Crisis core, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter and The world ends with you?

I know they've sold alright but they havent sold anywhere near what they have in Japan.

I could go on all day about games that sell by the bucket load over there but not over here and I think that pretty much confirms that sales over there mean pretty much nothing unless all your doing is comparing the differences between the two cultures.

Obviously sales of games anywhere in the world mean SOMETHING to us in the UK but in an instance like this, with the PSP, I agree that they are pretty irrelevant.

Not trying to start a war, its just my opinion.

Yes the PSP is selling well but only hardware. Software has very poor sales. People are buying the machine and hacking it it so they can play copied games which is the reason for the high hardware sales.

When he said they don't mean anything over here he meant that just because a machine does well in a particular territory doesn't mean its going to do well in the uk ... hence selling well in japan means nothing (to a uk retailer) you have to sell well here too.

The PSP has been badly marketed, the games have always been over priced, that doesn't mean some of them aren't worth it but they are a very select few. When a PS3 game can cost £40 and a PSP game can cost £35 there's definetely something wrong.

It only continues to sell because of the availability of homebrew software. If Sony are serious about reaching a decade then they'll need to have something sustainable in mind. One big gimmick isn't going to do it.

The PSP is almost dead already in the UK, and even a MASSIVE killer application or some TOP CLASS TRIPLE A titles will not rise sales even close to the DS..... Shame that this EXCELLENT Product has been outsold (in UK), by the less powerful DS ???
