'Aggressive investment will ensure Xbox win'

It’s victory or bust for Microsoft – and spending big will ensure triumph, says Xbox's David Gosen

As he confirmed that Xbox 360 has sold “well over” five million units in European territories, Microsoft EMEA’s European VP of strategic marketing for interactive entertainment David Gosen told MCV that investment in the market will ensure that the console stays ahead of rival PS3.

“We have some very aggressive plans in terms of investing in this market to be successful. We are in Europe to win. We’re not here to come second or third.”

“We are going to invest to win in Europe. There is no question about that.We understand the challenge in the region. We understand what we need to do to continue to drive the growth of the business. What we need to do is not just pay lip service to this but really invest.”

Keep checking back at MCVUK.com – or pick up this week’s MCV Magazine – for more from David Gosen’s first interview since returning to the console business.

It's quite amazing how once people get to Microsoft they feel they are 'Kings'. What would Gosen be saying were he still at Big N or SONY even?
It's not about the investment but the quality of the people and the programmes . Oh and the installed base, PS3 is at least 250K ahead of XBox 360 in Europe, all the analysts agree and last week, ....PS3 more than twice XBox 360 in Europe.
...Wii was even higher
Who is he kidding?

@ fanboy larry : if you think a console wich is selling more than the PS3 is dead, then the PS3 is in the grave.

Ridiculous, as most of your posts.

@Sam, think you need to check your figures Sam. The truth is that PS3 is outselling 360 even in USA this year and the rest of the world even more so. In 2007 the 360 sold less than it did in 2006. I am a 360 owner and sad to say that this time MS are certain to finish 3rd not 2nd. By the end of this year the PS3 will be ahead. Shame, good games, but poor company and poor quality.

A metaphor I see this as: If the Xbox 360 were an airplane would I fly it? Probably not! If the PS3 were an airplane would I fly it? I think I would! And think it goes quite fast!

I would see the same with my investments and that would be with what fly’s.

Wii it is then!

@ Sony zombie larry, the PS3 is masyivelt behind 360 in the US too. Despite a TWO massive price cuts of $t00 each last year alone, as compared to only a tiny SINGLE $50 price cut for the 360. Even so,the 360 continues to make big profiti, even as the PS3 registers huge losses($3.3 Billion so far and still counting). Sony in in deep trouble.

Right question is, which has more and better games, and the best online gaming system on the planet?
Answer, the 360. easy.

its very likely that ps3 allready passed xbox360 sales in europe, even with a launch over a year later ( http://news.vgchar...=1310 ). vgchartz numbers have been discussed so i know that they might be not completely right, but the general trend should be right.
in the us ps3 is also doing better than the 360 this year. in may ps3 outsold them by over 20k ( more than 10%) in the official npd numbers ( http://www.gamasut...19010 ).
So microsoft definitely has to worry cause atm they are selling less in all big markets.

@ quai, it is a a FACT, that the 360 is at least 750,000 units ahead of the PS3 in Europe. Those are Chartrack/GfK figures. So far, all we have from the Sony fanboys is pure hot air, and figures plucked from thin air.

Yeah?
How many times has the PS3 oustold the 360 since the PS3 was launched in
November 2006? Exactly two times. And, the PS3 has had two price cuts of $100 each in such a short time, to only one price cut of $50 for the 360. Not to mention the 360 is massively ahead of the PS3 in installed base in America.

Hey y'fanboys all - the best outcome for gamers is that the PS3, 360 and Wii all do well - which they clearly are. The 360 is getting better innovation (and much better RPGs - Microsoft wouldn't be putting down those dollars if it wasn't as competitive) due to competition from Sony, and I'd almost put the house on FW 2.4 taking a lot longer than July '08 to arrive if Live hadn't raised the bar for online gaming. And I'm sure both the 360 and PS3 wouldn't be getting Wiimote-like motion controllers if the Wii hadn't done what it did. All three have their strengths, and all three are a lot of fun - and more so because of the strong 360/PS3/Wii. The worst thing that could happen to any gamer on any system industry is that any of the big 3 becomes another Gamecube or, even worse, Dreamcast.

im a retailer and xbox is dead for us, dont care about gears of war 2 or what ever, most customers use flashed 360's and the system is looking dated, its not even HD, it only upscales to HD, your dvd player at home isnt HD is it?
expensive accessories that has to be microsoft, faulty machines has all lead to customers not trusting microsoft.

im sure they have a new machine close to designed anyway, early to start and early to finish.
first 2 years were very very good, but sales trends have really dropped off and titles on 360 are really not doing the same figures they used to.

Best leave it to the big boys eh?

oops forgot this was a fan boy site, what exactly am i missinformed about ? in my area 360 has been flashed alot, i have alot of customers asking for just used core systems and they even admit they have flashed machines, and microsoft wont fix the red light issue as they know its been flashed.
We sold a brand new Elite on sat, it was back on monday morning with 3 red lights !
we have been in business for 15 years, dont be a patronising fool, dont dismiss my experience or my business, this is fact for my area, i would be so foolish to suggest this is nation wide, but this IS true for my county.
360 sales were amazing first 2 years, but they are now on a large delcine, i would love all 3 formats to be doing fantastic as im a business man, no a fan man.
Wii is the only constant seller currently, all other formats are hard to judge for sales figures, due to supermarkets low prices and online prices.
Trade ins are a god send and our life line.
How mature to call me a name and offer no facts or education as you put it.

"I love the Sony fanboy comments blah blah".

I love the fact that this is a trade mag and there are still fanboys battling on this in general lol.

The guys working for a major corporation, and he is of course gonna beat his chest and make bullish comments, not only to secure his own tenous position, but to make the back-room boys and investors feel good.

The thing i love about these fanboy comments is that no one understands that having two or three major competitors is good for the industry and the consumer as a whole. Do you really want to go back to the days where the PS2 was the only real console to buy? Do you really want Sony to dictate totally what we are playing? Do you really want M$ for that matter?

I think we are in interesting times. All three firms have chosen a different path to achieve their ends. I cant wait to see how this "gen battle" is going to pan-out. Especially now that we are entering or in (depends on your point of view) a "mild recession", and analysts are already predicting things arent going to pick-up again as they were until 2012. M$ seem hell-bent on mass coverage in preparation for the "digital download" war that seems to be coming up, and have done really well, even if they do end up "second". You cant take away the fact that the 360 has been alot more successful than the first box, and has given them alot more stronger presence in the market.
Sony have created a fantastic machine in the PS3, even if it is an absolute pig to work with. I think Sony's two main weaknesses at the moment are price point and the fact that the corporate structure seems to be that of a multi-headed hydra, and the heads arent talking to each other. You have Sony Europe and USA all on the same wavelength, arguing about digital distribution, and how this will be the future, but this runs contrary to Sony Japans traditional business model. Sony are more interested in us buying a premium lump of plastic, and then buying the expensive HD TV + surround sound system that goes with it. Its served them well in the 80's and 90's and they cant see why it cant serve them now .For all the drum beating about downloads, it seems half-hearted compared to M$, as Daddy Japan seems to be more concerned with flogging premium hardware and pushing the Blu-Ray revolution down our throats. Its going to be really, really interesting.

I have no doubt that Sony will eventually come out on top again, but no where near such a massive margin as before, and will be prepared to lose loads of money in order to do it. I'm all for it. I take my hat-off to you Sony fanboys for paying 300 quid plus, and put up with all the broken promises that they expected us to patiently deliver on. I don't care about the cut-down HD, or the fact that many of the games werent anywhere near as graphically good as what they promised (word to the younger - never get excited about a game if all they show you for the first two years is FMV and cut-scenes - Look at MGS4, even Kojima admits its not half as good as he wanted it to be), but what really cheeses me off is the lack of backwards compatibility now. When i eventually do buy my cheaper, slimline PS3, I dont want want have to unplug my aging PS2 then plug in my PS3 if i want to watch, sorry I mean "play" all the MGS games sequentially.

I think marginally, due to brand loyalty, Sony will win, regardless of how much M$ spend, but its gonna be close. I will buy a PS3 one day, but only when there are more decent games out, and that graphical power that Sony has been promising for years becomes apparent. At the moment, I dont think the line-up of exclusives warrant a pricey purchase. I cant wait for you PS3'ers to get game coversions of games like Bioshock and Mass Effect, they look and play brilliant, even on my crap 360. So until that day arrives, I'm gonna carry on playing on the plethora of games my dead console has in preparation for the visual and gaming paradise that is coming to the PS3 any moment now . . . . . . . . .
