'Why GTA IV is no Godfather'

Pulitzer prize winner Junot Diaz says title ‘is not the revolution’

Respected novelist Junot Diaz has said that GTA IV is no equal to classic US dramas The Sopranos and The Godfather.

Pulitzer Prize winner Diaz called the game ‘art’ in a piece in the Wall Street Journal, but said it was “not the revolution”.

Diaz opened his opinion piece by statting his love for the GTA series, writing:

“I've been playing Grand Theft Auto since the beginning. I was there in 1998 when GTA was a throwaway with two-dimensional graphics on the original PlayStation. I was there in 2002 when Tommy Vercetti, the main character in a follow-up, blew a "Scarface"-size hole in Vice City.

“I rebuilt my gang with CJ, star of another sequel, San Andreas. Sandbox games (which is a fancy way of saying a game where you can ignore the game's objectives) shot through with criminal aberrance have always been a weakness of mine. Call it the American in me. Call it permanent adolescent.”

However, he later added:

“I love GTA IV and I have no doubt that it is art, but an equal to The Sopranos or The Godfather? Narrative art of that caliber is distinguished by its ability to re-organize our preconceptions, to shift us into a world that’s always been there but that we’ve been afraid to acknowledge, and I’m not convinced that GTA IV pulls off that miracle,” said the writer.

“GTA IV is brilliant, but despite what virtually all the reviews claim, it ain’t the revolution.”

Thanks to VG247 for the spot.

It's because he's a Pulitzer prize winner, so that legally allows him to be completely up his own arse, bestowing his worldly opinions on everything as if he was Moses. as we lovingly absorb every word from his four-eyed beardy mouth as the lapdogs that we are.

He's missing the point of GTA though, considering The Sopranos and The Godfather were majorily a serious take on the Mafia scene, while GTA has always been a satirical observation of American popular culture, he's comparing apples and oranges.

I admit myself, GTA IV probably has the weakest storyline of the 3D games so far, and even more so the worst soundtrack and level of freedom (especially seeing how much was stripped compared to San Andreas), but it was a great game nonetheless. Really a remake of GTA III more than anything else though.

"I've been playing Grand Theft Auto since the beginning..."

I stopped reading there as it comes off like one of those fanboy rants when trying to justify there overblown opinion...

"I've always been an Xbox fan but...."

****-off mate, you're opinion isn't welcome.

Why not...

He's dead right. While I love GTA, If you think it is on par with traditionally great narrative... then you're head is in your bum and your knowledge pool is dry. For the fan boy, any game they love rivals all great art. Just ask them and they'll be quick to show how shallow they are.

I agree with "Why not..." - if the guy is a pulitzer prize winner then he probably has some authority over narrative etc and is entitled to his opinion - I am sure he knows more than any of us that post on here - I dont think we will be winning any pulitzers But why care ? Firing up and sounding like a fan boy is worse - it is just his opinion....yours may or may not differ.
I am happy to say I love the game but dont necessarily think it is a revolution in narrative either - but that is my opinion.

I'm quite happy that the game is being criticised and being compared to the likes of the Sopranos and the Godfather. It means that gaming is finally being taken seriously as a medium.

@6:My point is that some random bloke's opinion is hardly news. Just because he has won a prize doesn't make his view any more valid than anyone else's.

Besides, how exactly did I sound like a fanboy? I didn't start raving about PS3 or anything of the sort. Stop trying to sound more intelligent than you actually are. This is not a news article.

Jack - calm down - nothing in my post was necessarily aimed at you or anyone else, although i do think a pultizer prize winner's opinion on narrative in games should carry some weight - as long as it is still considered to be only an opinion. He was possibly asked for it....so he gave it.

However, his opinion is just that....an opinion - and as already mentioned above it is great that the gaming media has achieved such recognition that it is even seen to warrant debate on a wider scale - when there is debate there is always obviously opposing opinions. Then again some of us just want to play games and we may say who cares about narrative anyways as long as the gameplay is there ? That is another opinion.
I dont know why we get so excited about such things. Also, I do consider this a news article - it is about games and gives insight into how the medium is being seen by others outside the industry - whether you consider this significant is once again a matter of your own personal opinion.

re fanboy - you could be a GTA IV fanboy ? you dont necessarily have to rave about PS3/Xbox to be considered a fanboy....(and dont worry I'm not saying you are!)

Considering "100 naked people mooning in a field", or "a dog left starving for a few days chained up in a room", are both considered art these days, I am glad this guy doesn't think GTA is art.
