Sony denies rumour that online move will be announced at E3
Sony has shot down a rumour that it is set to introduce PS2 titles as downloadable games on the PlayStation Store.
Next-gen.biz reports that a strong source supplied a PSN screenshot (pictured) that suggested Sony would be revealing the service at E3 this year – as its answer to Xbox Originals on 360.
But speaking to GamePro, Sony Computer Entertainment America’s director of corporate communications, Patrick Seybold, said the image hadn’t come from in-house, adding that Sony had no plans to distribute PS2 games over the PSN.
"I'm not sure where the image came from," he said. "At this point, we haven't made any announcements, and there are no plans for PS2 downloadable titles on PS3."

Shame....
A shame Sony aren't offering this service, really. There are some fantastic forgotten gems on PS2 that could really help bolster the format, especially with the lack of back compat on the 40gb model. I recently downloaded Fable from XBL Originals, and having been foolish enough to ignore it upon release, I realise my errors and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I will most definitely buy Fable 2 now, which I would never have done without that download. I'd love to have access on my PS3 to some of the more obscure PS2 titles that you just can't find nowadays, like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and Psychonauts......
Re: Shame....
I agree it would be great but i'd assume that this would be impossible without the hardware or software in the newer PS3's to play PS2 games. I don't know if it would simply be a case of downloading an emulator for the PS3 or if its just not feasable at all.
Re: Re: Shame....
I think emulation would be possible, early PS3s had a PS2 equivalent on a chip, with an eye to switching to software emulation down the line, until they binned it altogether.
Sony may be denying this, and sure, they may be telling the truth, but in the last year or so, Sony have issued at least two denials, only to make announcements to opposite effect within a month.
What better reason to dump backwards compatibility than the interest in selling PS2 titles to PS3 owners online?
