Reports of bricking sees platform holder remove anticipated update from servers
Yesterday’s arrival of the PS3 2.40 firmware update was a moment of celebration for the hardcore PS3 gaming community – but seemingly widespread reports of potentially console-wrecking problems has seen Sony remove the update from its servers.
Following the release of 2.40 yesterday morning, the number of complaints on gaming forums across the world soon escalated – indeed, even this author’s console seems to have suffered at the hands of the update.
The widespread problems lead to Sony last night announcing that 2.40 had been removed from its servers, stating on the US PlayStation blog that: “We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3.
“While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.”
In an update in the comments on the same article, Sony’s Jeff Rubenstein added that the firm had received “no reports of hardware issues following a successful install”.
2.40 bought with it not just the long-awaited in-game XMB but also the Achievement-like Trophy system.

Although it's only a small percentge (no problems with mine yet, touch wood) who are having these problems, it'll be interesting to see how many retailers, including myself, experience any returns over the next few days.
Sensible comments please... The fanboy flaming is getting really tiresome now.

Ive been abit weary of this update. I haven't updated my 60Gb (third one so far) just yet because I wanted to see how everyone else 60Gb's are with this latest update.

I'm the same as Hark. I always like to hear something other than "reports of bricking" before I go through the potentially-risky process of updating any console...

Although I don't own PS3 (I have 360 and PC), it is ashame for this to fail like this, as the new features did sound interesting.
One of the main reasons why I buy 360 games over PC is the achievements. For someone who has a PS3 and PC, I am sure they may have the same view now :)
“Pointless.”

Lest be honest here who really wants it. I downloaded it yesterday although it didnt "brick" my machine its pointless. The "in game XMB" requires you to quit the game if you want to acctually do anything usefull and I still cant play my music in game. Thanks sony for not only breaking some machines but also for making me sit through 10 minutes of an update for nothing!
