Insomniac, Infinity Ward and 2K Games all say they won’t patch existing titles

Despite claims that the PS3’s entire software catalogue will eventually boast support for PS3’s new Trophy system, three developers have now come out and stated that they will not be patching their existing titles.

Infinity Ward has said on its forum that it has no plans to patch Call of Duty 4, adding that it would had loved to had the functionality been around for launch.

Also jumping on the doubt bandwagon is 2K Games, which has stated that Trophy support will not be added to Civilzation Revolutions.

In addition, IGN reports that Insomniac currently has no plans to patch either Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction or Resistance: Fall of Man, though the upcoming Resistance 2 is scheduled to offer Trophy support.

Developers who have stated they will be patching older titles include EA and Naughty Dog.

I can appreciate that going to the trouble of putting trophy support in already established games will cost money and take time which could be put to better use but surely the addition of trophies could be used to boost sales or even reignite the sales of many titles. At the very least it would keep people playing your game.

when I read the forums at this present moment in time - people who had NOT bought Super Stardust HD are actually forking out and buying it and it's expantion pack!
Q: How many additional sales would it need to cover the cost of adding a Trophy patch?
Aditionally - what better way to keep the masses active with their games than to bring this patch...!

Seriously, how long would it take to add a few trophies onto a game? Ratchet and Clank already has the structure for it, just give trophies for the skill points they have already had in the game. Drake's is probably going to end up giving away trophies for their achievement style list. Surely it's a nice way of giving a little something back to the fans who do care about them?
Call of Duty 4 should be even easier, they've already got achievements on the 360, so should every multiplatform game, I can't see how many manhours it would take to do it. Frankly I'm dissapointed that some developers don't want to take the time to do what appears to be a relatively small ammount of work on an already released game. Yes, they have future releases to think about, but giving a little back to the fans for free can't be that much work compared with their new games can it?

Its not that they don't have the time. The problem is that while creating graphics and integrating the system doesn't seem like much the problem is that the people who made the game and are most familiar with its code eg the people who could do it the fastest are already on new projects, and if you take them off of those to put them to work on trophies you hold up the project they were currently working on.

Then it all has to be tested, so your testing guys stop testing the new product and go back to the old one. Then you have the problem of using new people instead which causes problems as they have never seen the code before and it takes time to get into the swing of things.

“Bad Journalism?”

Why does the media insist on misinforming the public? There were never any claims that the entire library of games would be made to support trophies. Sony said from the beginning that it would be up to developers to patch past titles. They were also quick to point out that they could only vouch for 1st party titles supporting trophies in the immediate future. But at some point in the FUTURE they would require all devs to support trophies moving forward.

We've been waiting to hear which games would & wouldn't be patched since trophies were announced. Don't make this out to be a larger issue than it really is!

Eric Lempel, talking to Gamespy:

"Ultimately, we'll have trophies for every game."

Also, Infinity Ward said that "At this time..." they didn't have any plans to add support. Down the line when they feel they have more time to dedicate to something like that then I wouldn't be surprised if they add it in.

For Christ sake, You people have been bitching for months for this and now all you can do is complain! So what old games don't support XMB at least it's finally here. Next you'll want them to go back and redo the BC stuff as well. It's always a lose lose with you guys.

I Heard it takes like 4 hours to impliment the patch for trophies , If developers are not willing to spend 4 hours on me, Why the hell should I spend 4 hours on them
i.e. $60.00,
I mean if developers arent going to patch there old games, I for one wont buy there new ones when they come out if they feel like its a waste of there time becouse they already have are money, then F**K em.
If i buy call of duty 5 and then HOME comes out or another update will they even support it, there should be a patch from every game developer on the PS3, its only going to make them more money on people that dont have the game yet and want trophies, and people that do have the game, will get them interested in playing it through again, and will peek inthusiasm for new games.

Cmon GTA4, COD4, RE1, MGS4 dont you care about your customers....................WTF

Insomniac didn't say they wouldn't ever, they said they are focused on finishing of R2(which has trophy support) they never said never. At some point in time these devs that are 'casting doubt' will implement the feature in past games, especially Insomniac. So yeah this is sensationalist crap on MCV's part, they are making a story and a headline that is false, bad journalism

Funny how nearly every Sony fanboy pre trophies announcement thought achievements were pointless and now they're complaining about not patching old games for them!

I'm a 360 owner but not a fanboy, if trophies are done as well as achievements you'll soon find them quite addictive.

For those who can't accept the good points of either console until their favorite brand has it, grow up games are a form of entertainment not a religion.

yh i agree...i have a 360 n the achievements are a good aim so nw the ps3 has trophies then will ave the same effect.
im glad that they have arrived n wud like some more back dated trophy data but it aint a biggy rely aslngas games support it in the future..
i purchased supa stardst generally to see how the trophies work, i like, it has another aspect which is ur level so back dated games wud b gud and surely there is still money in it....im sure there is more ppl than myselff that have bought super stardust so the same theory shud apply especially for big titles like gta4 n COD4........anyways,im glad the ps3 supports the trophys..a winner al round i think ......

Hmmm.... I really think that some Companies are just being lazy. I mean, Yeah Insomniac has got a lot of work to do if they want a 2008 release, But Infinity Ward, I mean Call of Duty 4 is a smash hit for both consoles, There's only been one map pack released, They still haven't implemented Dualshock 3 support, I mean c'mon. I'm sure that the amount of players playing Call of Duty 4 dropped since the release of GTA IV and MGS4, and this would increase it a bunch and if you had Mappack trophies, then people would purchase that as well. What is Infinity Ward working on anyways, CoD6, Release date late 2009 probably. I'm sure that it wouldn't take long to add it, I'm not trying to sound mean, But I have completely lost interest in CoD4 and with games like Battlefield BC and other Great online shooter games being released, then what is the point in even playing it. Trophies. that'd make me and a bunch of other people start putting in there CoD4 discs and unlocking all of the trophies

@Calibrate: wtf, if it was so easy to do do you not think it would be done already? everytime they go back to an older game they push the new one further away. They have deadlines to meet, obviously if they free up then they will do it, but they won't purposely put themselves in a situation where they will miss their drops and in turn lose a lot more faith from ALL COD fans, not just the PS3 owners.

I agree that adding Trophies to older games will boost sales. As well as be a nice PR exercise for your customers. If cost is a factor how about supplying a patch similar to an extra set of maps for a small fee?

I'm not surprised that companies arent adding these now. If sony had kept up there promises about "Home" ect when they were ment to come up there would be no problem. They are effectively now saying we messed up so can you game developers do the work now to put the trophies in in retrospect.

Sony have just lost too much ground to Microsoft this time around.

Finally, trophies have arrived (sort of)

I had the xbox 360 for a long time. At first I didnt care about achievements but eventually I found that I didnt feel I could say i had finished the game without first striving for every achievement. It made me feel that I had got absolutely everything from a game that I could possibly have. I then got a ps3 and was having troble falling in love with it, always seeing its blandness compared the the xbox. But now the ps3 has an exciting future, I've decided to stick with it and sell the xbox. Plus, I actually believe the ps3 trophy system is much more meaningful, what with the 4 levels of trophies and levelling of gamertags etc. Imagine how proud you would be to display your platinum trophies ( which im assuming will be ridiculously hard to get). The bronze silver etc system allows one to see how hard you have worked rather than just adding to a cumalative score.

I'd love it if COD4 got patched and I know I'd play it twice as much. Lets just hope COD:WaW will have adequate trophies!
