New PS2 coming to Europe

MCV’s prediction rings true – eventually – as India and EU get slimmed-down model

Sony is to launch a new slimmed-down version of PS2 in Europe in October – as predicted by MCV back last year.

According to The Economic Times, the new model will have a built-in AC power adapter and will launch simultaneously in India and Europe.

However, the price of the ‘fourth generation’ of PS2 will remain as it did before.

SCE India will also be launching the PlayStation Network for PS3 in the region.

SCE PlayStation country manager Atindriya Bose said:

“The PlayStation Network is ready for India. It is only the integration of the payment gateway that needs to be done.” said Mr Bose. We shall launch it by the end of this fiscal, he added.

Sony Play Station, over the last 13 years, has evolved as every gamers aspiration. It has its own cult following and to grow this base, SCE wants to market PS-2 as gaming console for novices of all age groups and class.

“PS-2 is an entry-level console, which helps first timers to enter the gaming zone,” added Bose.

They keep this up and the controller will be bigger than the console at some point.

Would've preferrred for them to drop the price even further, i know they don't need to as it still sells but would've been more impressive.

Cannot see who is going to buy this.

If they had dropped the price to £30 maybe.

I think you guys are under a misapprehension.

This is the same slim PS2 form factor as before but this time with a built in ac adapter. ie the SCPH-90000 model that has already been released in Japan.

Re-release an 8 year old console to give consumers another reason not to upgrade to PS3...

What next.. Nintendo to release the DD!

@stevo: agreed, this xmas is def its last as the intermediate console or one before the 360 and PS3 is the Wii, not the PS2. And now that the DS has a big range of games for the same money you can get a newer machine with up to date games instead of a PS2 were the games are getting increasingly harder to find.

4th generation? i thought this would be 3rd? Do they count fat PS2 with the built in IR sensor as the 2nd generation version to make this the 4th?

I don't see the point...the ps2 is slimline anyway, if you make it much smaller it will be the psp. Also like someone said b4, they're just giving another reason not to buy a ps3...
