On Tour sells 300,000 units during its first week on sale, providing Activision with biggest DS success to date

One of modern gaming’s biggest success stories is celebrating newfound domination on Nintendo’s DS, with publisher Activision announcing that Guitar Hero On Tour sold over 300,000 copies in its first week on sale in the US, GameDaily reports.

The numbers make it Activision’s largest ever DS launch by a considerable margin. It also ranks as one of the firm’s top five ever product launches.

"Guitar Hero is one of the most successful entertainment properties and continues to push the boundaries of innovation with Guitar Hero: On Tour," Activision’s president and CEO Mike Griffith stated. "The game's breakthrough peripheral brings the Guitar Hero experience to the 41 million DS users in North America and Europe, where they can play anywhere, anytime."

Guitar Hero On Tour will be released in the UK and Europe on July 18th.

Does this game not demonstrate what the strength of DS game sales would be if the R4 was not in such common use?

The fact that this game is unplayable without the plug-in fret peripheral has forced people that would normally steal this game to have to buy it.

@Bob: agreed, its starting to look like developers have cottoned onto this, like with that new exercise one (not sure of the name) but the ad shows an attachment that plugs into the DS.

While I don't agree with the use of such cards I do think it would be great for Nintendo to support the development of homebrew games in a sort of Wii Ware style community, as it keeps interest in their console and might even be the birth of 1 or 2 gems... look at were geometry wars started.
