PS3 Home on track for autumn

PSN guru Eric Lempel says ‘fall’ release will not be a work-in-progress update, but a fully-fledged service

Whilst Sony works on ironing out the ongoing problems with its recent significant update to PS3, PSN director Eric Lempel has said that the autumn arrival of Sony’s social network Home is on track and will be a full-blooded, non-beta release.

Previously, PSN’s Susan Panico had stated the Home’s rollout would be managed along the same lines as Gmail, where an open beta service is launched and then refined over time.

However, speaking to Next-Gen, Lempel stated: “The Home open beta is still on schedule for release later this fall. If you think about Gmail and Susan’s reference, Gmail when it launched in beta was a fully functional email service. I personally was using it and it offered everything you’d expect, but was in beta just to say that there’s more to come and maybe it’s not fully polished.

“The reason we’ve been delaying Home is so that we can deliver a high quality service that the users will enjoy. Even though it will be in beta, it will be a fair representation of what the service can be and its potential, so it won’t be a 0.5 release, it will be a fully robust service.”

Lempel also spoke of Sony’s upcoming movie downloads service, saying: “I don’t have any more specifics right now, but it will go live in the US this summer and I think it will offer consumers everything they’re looking for from us. It will offer everything they expect from us and probably a little bit more.”

Sounds a little like they've fallen behind and using the gmail style beta release strategy is a way to cover it up. I just hope that if they do release on time that this beta atleast does the basic stuff right from the start as the only beta bit about gmail was the extra features.

Hope it works for them cus if they have a stable starting block then they'll get lots of feedback and hopefully be able to mould Home into something the community want instead of some predetermined network. But i personally don't have a lot of faith in Sony being as dynamic and as willing to change Home from user feedback.

Any more than anybody else mate. Like M$ its about controlling your IP in a way you see fit to maximise usage and capital from your users. Have to say though, Sony have stepped up of late and I am sorely tempted to buy a PS3 in early 2009, I reckon there will be enough games to warrant a purchase, and at least i wont have to worry about HD's or wifi like I did with my 360 straight out of the box.

Looks like I will be buying a PS3 sooner than expected. Today, my xbox 360 has decided to display blue and pink monochrome on screen. Changed my output cables, different TV's etc. apparently its a precursor for the RROD.

After a year and half I thought i was in the clear, and that I wasn't going to be plagued with the hardware problems that early adopters seemed to be plagued with.Maybe I should have expected it, I have been playing it a hell of alot more than usual since i have finished my dissertation, and I start my Masters in September. maybe I should have expected the old girl not to be able to handle 3hrs a night straight playing lol.
This is not some sony fanboy rant, just your average Joe who is cheesed off. Dont get me wrong, I love my 360, and have had some brilliant gaming experiences. I'm especially gonna miss "Mass Effect" which in my opinion is one of the greatest western RPG's to be released in a long time. At least I clocked Bioshock (Whatever system you own PS3 or 360 buy this game!) and GTA4 before it waved the white flag.

I know i could try and phone M$ and get it fixed but Im thinking sod it, at least it gives me the excuse to go and buy a PS3 sooner lol. Shame M$, im scabbing my 360 games on ebay and gonna spend 300 quid on a PS3 now. looks like in gonna watch MGS4 sooner than expected lol. Sorry for the off-topic rant, but whilst we are discussing how pricey sony hardware is, I'm coming to the conclusion that you get what you pay for lol *dusts down slimline PS2 and boots up god of war 2*

@woodins: "whilst we are discussing how pricey sony hardware is, I'm coming to the conclusion that you get what you pay for"

Not too sure I agree that Sony prices go hand in hand with reliability, as anyone familiar with the upside down Playstation will tell you...

Wow, two posts on the bounce about MS. You really must hate them considering this is a sony topic, or you have a divine love for them as MS was not mentioned once until your two posts. You may say "This is not some sony fanboy rant here" but your making yourself look like one.

BACK TO TOPIC

I think Home is an ok idea from Sony, personally not for me, but i'd like to see where they go with it. It could be better than most make out, but then it could not. I wouldn't write it off. We just have to see how gamers react to it. Hopefully it can bring the PSN community/gamers together more.

I, on the other hand, have been looking forward to Home... I predict it will be as big, or dare I say, BIGGER, than MySpace! I think the slogan could easily be... "Welcome to your new addiction. Welcome Home!"
