Noel Gallagher blames games for street violence

Oasis man joins the debate, linking video games to knife crime in the UK

While picking up an award at the O2 Silver Clef music awards last week, Oasis singer, writer and guitarist Noel Gallagher voiced his thoughts on street violence, claiming video games were in part to blame.

“People say it's through violent video games and I guess that's got something to do with it.”

Speaking about his fears about his children growing up in the UK, Gallagher said:
"If kids are sitting up all night smoking super skunk cannabis and they come so desensitised to crime because they're playing these video games, it's really, really scary.”

He continued: “In my day, status was trying to be somebody, do you know what I mean, not trying to kill somebody?"

Thanks to the BBC.

He continued: “In my day, status was trying to be somebody, do you know what I mean, not trying to kill somebody?"

Or watching your brother attack photographers.

What game influenced him to do that?????

Very rich coming from a man that used to do more drugs and alcohol than a pharmacy and brewery put together.

Nice credentials.

... You really need to see the behaviour of the youth, and adults come to think of it who are the great game buying public and you'd see what he means.

It's a sad indictment of the industry when a large percentage of your customer base think they're a character from Grand Theft Auto, act accordingly and don't see a problem with it.

What is even more frustrating is that the police, certainly in my area seem reconciled to it.

My friend got stabbed in the ear in Manchester in 1988. Walking home after a night out we were attacked in the street by complete strangers. Don't recall GTA being around back then.

The fact that Oasis have a new album to promote makes this statement very significant, how else are they going to get attention when there's no buzz about the new album around?

I think you'll find UK street gangs are more likely trying to emulate the gangs in the US, not Nico from GTAIV. Also knife crime and gun crime has been around for years in the UK, it's only because of the tabloids and their 'Broken Britain' scare mongering the problem seems a lot worse than it actually is. There aren't gangs, knife & gun crime happening in every town and city throughout the UK as the media would have us believe, in fact the fast majority of young people are quite the opposite from what the tabloids portray them as.. Poverty and lack of education in the poorer parts of the inner cities are the major cause of gang related crime, and that's a social and ecenomical issue, not video games or rap music or any other form of entertainment.

Mr Gallagher, here, is quite clearly talking out of his backside, jumping on the band-wagon for no other reason than to ramp up his already wavering celebrity status.

Yet another high-vis person claiming video games are responsible for the downfall of civilised society. It's strange...I've been playing games since I was 10. Hitting things, blowing things up, attacting "enemies" with swords and guns right through to today where I even blow people up for fun and drive manicly through cities.

All that and yet for some reason when I put a controller down I know I shouldn't go off and do it in the real world.

I doubt people go off shooting people because it was fun in a game and they think it'll be fun in the real world. They're just disturbed phycos to start with!

Can we have a ban on stupid celebrites voicing their uninformed opinions about gaming and other issues?

It is because of idiots making crazy statements like this that the general public don't know the actual facts, since for some reason these idiots with below average IQ's tell them a random thought or snippet of information they were given to them from their PR bunnies, and they feel the need to back it up to sell their album to the mis-informed members of the public who pretend to have moral values.

Speaking of Celebrites...Hey Bono, well done on Making Poverty History. Glad to see that poverty doesn't exist any more ;)

Well I blame Noel Gallagher for street violence.

If kids are sitting up all night smoking 'super skunk cannabis', like Noel, they lose their senses and any intelligence they might have had.

Noel Gallagher - What a plonka!
I too, am sick of these idiots making these wild claims.
Typical fleet street nonsense, kids are getting stabbed and the media need a scapegoat. I agree that it is not as bad as the media make out but it is that consumption of fear that keeps the population under control. - SHINE
Here is an example - You may recall a few years ago that someone was murdered after playing manhunt? You were lead to believe by the media that it was the killer who had been playing Manhunt but it was actually they guy who was killed who had been playing manhunt! - SHINE
Back to the subject, I never thought when I was watching Oasis at Knebworth that Noel "I'm becoming my dad" Gallagher would come out with this rubbish. - SHINE
In any case have you tried playing any game after smoking super skunk? It's impossible. - SHINE
Hmmm, I wonder if Noel would be slating games if one of his rip-off's appeared on Guitar Hero or singstar or Rock band? - SHINE

Full agreement that violence in the real world in not linked to video games but to the underdevelopment of social structures in society.
If it were plausible to suggest Video games as a cause then all other media content would need to be considered and censored that includes Movies/music even the news.
If it does happen that a gamer may commit a crime like this it is more due to mental problems.

Just proves what I have always believed, Oasis are nothing but a group of thick chavs that somehow persuaded the world they were good by copying the Beatles and then releasing the same song with different lyrics (sic!) over and over again. Most 80's Manchester bands have more talent in a single basist than Oasis have the whole line-up. And lets not forget the whole "New Labour" affair, yeah way to rebel lads!!

Don't be a bunch of tools.

"People say it's through violent video games and I guess that's got something to do with it"

Not

"OMG VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES ARE THE CAUSE OF EVERYTHING!!1!!1!"

He telling it how it is, these dickheads around these days will think its awesome from these games.

He never said it's the games fault. He never tried to shut GTA down. He simply pointed out that the way these idiots have been brought up seeing things like GTA will have an effect in a bad way.

I'm sure your internet verbal attacks are keeping him awake at night.

Get over yourselves you bunch of ****ing pretentious muppets.

Ahem.. showing my age here, but I vaguely remember a popular singer of the time "Englebert Humperdink" - yes really! - going to Glasgow and talking to the young thugs about why they were carrying SWORDS around the Gorbals. This was some time in the late sixties / early seventies. I was VERY young at the time :-)
Maybe someone can find a UFace link and send it to the Beeb?
