£500m bill for Xbox ‘red ring of death’

£500m bill for Xbox ‘red ring of death’

Microsoft sets aside huge sum to fix infected Xbox Elite consoles, says The Mirror

A £500 million repair fund has been set up for Xbox 360 Elite consoles suffering the ‘red ring of death’ fault, according to The Mirror.

The fault, which freezes console units, was apparently less-likely to occur on Elite machines.

In a statement issued to the newspaper, Microsoft said: "The majority of Xbox 360 owners enjoy a great experience with their console. Anyone with a problem should call Xbox customer service."

Update: MCV has since learnt that The Mirror story relates to last year's fund set up to deal with the problem, and is not specific to Elite consoles.

I had this on a pre-owned unit just the other day. The manufacture date is only 9 months old. When i phoned they they refused point blank to repair it under warrenty and wanted £65 to repair it. I've refused on the principle its less than a year old, i still have the machine here. Have others had this problem?

we sold a brand new elite one sat and it was back on monday, all the customer did was turn it on and it had 3 red lights, no problems as we sawpped it and distributor gave us a replacement, but we have had alot of customers who claim xbox will not fix their 3 red light issue for free and want a credit card to pay upfront

It was a second hand unit, i spoke to tech support, then the supervisor, who asked for proof of purchase, which i emailed they then called back and confirmed it would cost £65. I kept getting told this figure during all the calls but was not happy with it hence speaking to a supervisor, who did sound like they were sorting it, but after the proof was supplied it was back to the £65 story. Something to do with a policy in place which changed in April of this year to do with 2nd hand machines

yeah i wouldnt say it was 2nd hand as they would say warrenty is only with the person who bought it and the warrenty doesnt pass over, id call again and say its new, most of our customers who call xbox never had to show proof of purchase, say its 10 months old

@7

Thats what i thought orginally, that was my plan but once i'd given the serial number they knew it was a second hand machine when my details did not match their system.

My point i tried to argue with them is this machine is 9 months old no matter if its had 1 owner or 5.

Wasn't this £500m repair budget announced prior to E3 2007? The Mirror news is unclear.

this is totally unfair no matter if the console is new or used 3 years ext warrenty is just that, they just want to avoid paying to repair a console if they can,
this is the problem with register consoles, we will actually take in 3 red light consoles if we have the customers details so we can call up and get it replaced and then sell the replacement,

This is really old news. This was one of the last things Peter Moore did before he left MSFT. That was ages ago. The figure quoted as $1Bn.

. . .In other news. . . Sony release PS3 console, Argies invade Falkland Islands and Adam and the Ants are No 1 in the charts. Come on!

Seems to me that the 2 news papers that reported this old news must have shares in Sony and wanted to divert the attention from the PS3 firmware update that bricked consoles before it was pulled.
I guess news papers printing stories for their own agenda is kind of old news too.

I bought one on the week it came out in Oct 07, and it failed 1 week before xmas. I bought a replacement one, which failed on me instantly, didn't even have a chance to enter my name.

These were both brand new, and failed more than my borthers premium.

I did get a replacement elite after the last one broke (the shop were a bit funny about it, but agreed to swap it), and I still have it, and touch wood, it is still running. 6 months, and I am almost waiting for it to break based on past experience.

Having said that, I am alot more cautious now, and don't leave it running for more than half a day.

@3 Elite
Consumer law says the machine must be fit for the purpose it was originally sold for, which this obviously isn't. Its an inherrent fault with the console and as such its down to them to either prove the fault has been caused by mis-use etc. or to fix it free of charge. It may be the case that after 6 mths the onus is on you to prove the fault is inherrent (can't remember exactly), but that shouldn't be to hard with the wealth of information available in this regard.
Big companies love to tell you they have no obligation to repair/replace but this just isn't the case

Ouch, £500 million ooh , that's baaad! They've got an uphill struggle when the new console comes out, it's going to have to be practically made of Kevlar to guarantee sales and they'll have to demonstrate that!

Geez, I wanted to replace my Pro for an Elite because I thought they were reliable. Turns out they are bad as well. I believe they all have the latest board, don't they? Falcon I think it's called.
I won't bother replacing my reliable (touch wood) Pro. I believe 2/3 of these are fine anyway.
Sounds like the fault rate of Elites is just as bad. Such a pity as the console is great otherwise.

Ive sent 2 machines back with RROD. Very quick turn around (max 10days) and have never been asked for proof of purchase for either. Never been told I had to pay anything. Both were picked up by UPS the next day.
The first one went back to ireland iirc but my latest elite had to go to germany.

Is this the sam Mirror that went and took oictures from a porn site, and tried to pass them off as US troops in Iraq?
Why on earth would The Mirror drag out a story about events from one year ago, based on uncomfirmed stories from some 16 year old British boy, if The Mirror is not pushing their normal anti-American agenda? The British tabloids sink evebn lower into the gutter and take yet another step into idiot journalism and filth.
