Sony releases updated PS3 firmware

2.41 brings Trophies and in-game XMB and addresses boot-up problems

Following last week’s kafuffle which saw PS3 firmware 2.40 released and then withdrawn following reports of system failures, an updated 2.41 version of the software has been made live on Sony’s PSN network.

Speaking of the update on the official US PlayStation blog, PSN operations director Eric Lempel stated: “As many of you know, we released PS3 firmware update v2.40 last week, but had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB wouldn’t display after the update was installed. We’ve been able to fix the problem, and I’m happy to report that firmware update v2.41 will be released shortly.

“We want to extend our apologies to the PlayStation community for any inconvenience. Now we’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone online and racking up those trophies.”

So far there has been no reports of problems, and some users have even noted a few additions in 2.41, including a new Platinum Trophy icon, additional Gamer ID features and faster loading of in-game XMB icons.

@Ian: 100% agree with you. My Launch day PS1 was crap. Had to turn it upside down to get it to play.

i used the term beta test with jest. Beta testing should be done in house or to a small trial group. All sony are doing is chucking untested updates out.

@3 my point exactly, again sony chucking out an unrealiable product.

on the positive i've not heard of any problems from this update yet so maybe its sorted

Unreliable? I must have had my head under a rock for the last 12 months. My PS3 is over a year old and it has never given me a single problem. It accepted the 2.40 update perfectly fine. If i'm not mistaken wasn't the problem someone hacking in to the firmware update whilst it was being published?
Unreliable hardware sounds like an excuse from neglectful console owners.
On the same note I've never had problems with my 360 or wii either.
