FAMITSU: Console overtakes Wii and DS Lite in February – and stays top ever since; Sony system top-seller again in June
PSP has comfortably become the best-selling console in Japan for the first half of the year – shifting just shy of two million units in the region.
According to data from MCV’s exclusive media partner Famistu/Enterbrain, Sony’s handheld was lagging behind DS Lite and Wii in January, but overtook both consoles in February – and has outsold them ever since.
Matching its performance in April and May, PSP again outsold all of its competition in June, shifting 274,131 compared to nearest rival Wii’s 235,990.
According to Famitsu data, the total sales for the first half of the year – from December 31st, 2007 to June 29th, 2008 – read:
PSP: 1,964,461 units
Wii: 1,720,263
DS Lite: 1,593, 844
PS3: 548,273
PS2: 257,701
Xbox 360: 80,290
And the total sales for the month of June were:
PSP: 274,131 units
Wii: 235,990
DS Lite: 195, 714
PS3: 139, 494
PS2: 34,537
Xbox 360: 10,964

Attach rates?
Does anyone know what the software attachment rate it like over there on PSP? Monster Hunter 2 has been a HUGE success and has been a big reason for the jump in hardware. I am curious to know if the consumers are picking up any other titles in quantity.
PAL hardware sales in the UK are healthy but its the software where they are struggling due to piracy.
I'd like to see PSP keep going. A competitive handheld is healthy for the market, but us third parties need software sales (not just hardware in the hands of consumers!)
Re: Attach rates?
The announcement of PSO for PSP must have helped. It's certainly got me interested in getting a PSP again...

I somehow think its not his PSP that is making him so happy...
PSP outsells Wii and DS
To me, what is even more amzing about PSP sales so far this year, is that the PSP is actually outselling the Wii in Japan this yearYTD(last year, the Wii far outsold the PSP), and the Wii has only been out for just over a year in Japan. So far this year, Wii sales are running at over 250,000 units less than last year's Wii sales, at the same time as PSP sales have more than tripled. After just over a year on the market, I'd have thought its too soon for Wii sales to be going down, especially as PSP sales are massively up, and the PSP has been on the market for 4 years.
Re: PSP outsells Wii and DS
I think that Software is helping drive the sales. It would be interesting to see which titles and genres are helping also would give a clue what UK retail could be selling and promoting.
