E3 08: Squad–based Halo title to be announced tonight?

Rumours point to a Master Chief-free squad-based FPS as next 360 outing for developer Bungie

Given the huge global and commercial success that was Halo 3, it seems a mere given that Microsoft will look to continue its Halo franchise at this year’s E3 – and rumours are suggesting that a brand new entry to the series will be confirmed at the Microsoft press conference tonight.

GameSpot
is suggesting that the next title will not feature the iconic faceless Earth-defender Master Chief, and will also differ from previous entries to the series by focusing more on a squad-based game mechanic ala Ghost Recon.

The game itself, which is said to be grittier than any previous Halo title and boast a great deal of focus on online co-op gameplay, is described as a cross between Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy title and Epic’s Gears of War.

The Microsoft press conference kicks off at 18:30 tonight UK time.

Good to see Microsoft and Bungie coming up with fresh ideas. This is just what the 360 needs. Well done to all concerned!
