E3 08: ‘We’re stealing PlayStation’s franchises’, says Microsoft

Boss of entertainment division says PSOne and PS2–associated series are ‘finding a new home’

The head of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business, Don Mattrick, told a packed LA Convention Centre this morning that traditional PlayStation franchises have “found a new home” on Xbox 360.

Following the confirmation by Square Enix that Final Fantasy XIII would be coming to the Microsoft console, a jubilant Mattrick closed the company’s presentation by stating series that have previously been seen as PlayStation-affiliated titles are now being thought of as 360 titles by the gaming populous.

He said:

"Wow. That [FF XIII] looked incredible. It’s another astonishing addition to our array of RPG titles.

“It shows that a long list of former PlayStation franchises are now finding a new home on 360. It’s happened with Guitar Hero, it’s happened with Madden and now it’s happening with Resident Evil and Final Fantasy.”

He added: “Xbox 360 is now feeding the experience of fierce gaming loyalists whilst walking everyone into interactive entertainment. What do today’s announcements mean for you? With Xbox 360, there is no better way to deliver fun and entertainment to you living room.”

Sony losing the plot?

You do have to question what exactly is Sony's direction with the Playstation brand, there does seem to be a feeling of indifference from the company at losing so many key franchises to the competition. Sony have dropped the ball and, it would appear, that they couldn't really care?

Sony bought exclusives to kill their competition in the past, so that is not a valid argument.

Think it might be a good idea to go run for shelter within the sancity of the industry forums during E3....the general message boards are going to be rife with fanboy comments over this period...I can feel a fanboy storm acoming.

stealing?

Stealing? I don't see that in any of his quotes, nor do I believe that is in the subtext. Holding a platform that can no longer be denied by any responsible publisher that intends to do profitable business? This seems a bit more likely... I do not see any of the platform holders buying the ability to "also" get a game. GTA, Guitar Hero, et al would have made far less money had they not supported multiple platforms.

Coming from a Playstation 3 owner, this wasn't really stealing. This wasn't even a major play by Microsoft (though it's funny that they would turn it into that.) What happened here was a financially responsible decision from Square Enix wherein they decided to gain more revenue by spreading to another system. They are not "moving" to the system, as the game is still available to PS3 owners. I think fanboys of both systems just need to sit back and let it go. And Microsoft, enjoy the game. Now I'll have more people to talk to about that game and enjoy it with them. It's about the gaming guys, and the fun. Let's not get caught up in the petty crap. That's the media's job.

No surprise that Microsoft are banging on about this but why didn't he mention the fact that Bioshock is heading the other way? Hmmm....

I think the correct line is: We're buying PS franchises.
But really, who gives a ****!! PS games are now on the Wii. How long is the 360 gonna last?? Out of every single game that has come out on both consoles; which is better?? The PS3 of course. Sharper graphics, better game rendering etc...so when the game comes out for both consols what are u gonna buy for?? The one where the game looks and runs better. So in all essence THE PS3!!!

@ 9's comment-"Out of every single game that has come out on both consoles; which is better?? The PS3 of course. Sharper graphics, better game rendering etc...so when the game comes out for both consols what are u gonna buy for?"

Actually none of that is true. Half Life: Orange Box, The Darkness, PES 08, FIFA 08 and many more ran better on the Xbox 360. Orange Box & PES 08 on the PS3 were particularly bad.

While there is no denying the quality of titles like Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and the mightly impressive MGS 4, (MGS 4 being visually more impressive than any 360 title to date), many multiformat titles on the PS3 are pretty poor and simply don't run as good as their Xbox 360 counterparts.

Sorry to have burst your bubble there, son.

Sorry but I see this as old games are all coming out on the 360 and therefore new, innovative and original titles are therefore coming out on the Wii and PS3. The 360 will be rammed full of old ideas, sequels and tired remakes... I don't read this as a positive statement.

Playstation 3 have quality (although slightly more expensive), while Xbox 360 has quantity (with its high level of fan noise and "REOD", with cheap old technology).

Game graphics, so games that are made exclusively for the PS3 is significantly more attractive than the most goodlooking games to X360spel.

But the games that made multi team by one percent margin over the PS3 in graphics, usually beacuse games are made directly from a "PC environment", and a X360 is like "a PC". But the PS3 sometimes tend to have better flow and larger environments in these multiplatform game releases for all consoles.

Personally, I prefer the PS3 just because it is quieter, the quality and to the blue-ray facility.

The really odd thing about the fanboy phenomenon is most of them didn't pay for their console and if it gets killed off it's not them that will have to pay for another is it? It's going to be their parents , who probably don't understand in a YOUR TEARING ME APART kind of way, haha! That and the idea that the "PS3 must be better than then 360 because the PS3 is newer and anything over 18 months old is ancient init?" is pretty odd too. I thing the FFXIII exclusivity deal will be very interesting to watch as regards to fanboys and their excuses even more so/

FFXI appeared on the 360 at launch, so fFXIII being on a 360 equals a no brainer.
FFXII was a flop, and only did well in Japan.

So more Mario, Zelda, Gran Tursimo, MGS and Tekken games is Nintendo and Sony being innovative and orginal and not pumping out 'old ideas, sequels and tired remakes'?

Yet some more classic damage control from the fanboys. /lol

Why PS3 will be leading and XBOX still following... because Sony transports it's ideology of pop culture into their console whilest Microsoft thinks and treats the entertainment business like a slot machine.

@ 12, “Sorry but I see this as old games are all coming out on the 360 and therefore new, innovative and original titles are therefore coming out on the Wii and PS3. “

You are kidding right? Nintendo has released to the tune of at least 8 Mario games sequels on the Wii alone so far in just 2 years. Talk about franchise abuse. No console has been ”rammed full of old ideas, sequels and tired remakes” than Nintendo’s Wii. right now. Meanwhile, the 360 currently has more JPRG’s, mostly new IP’s like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery etc, than the Wii or PS3 have.

I look at it this way, sure he doesn't exactly say he is "stealing" franchises or ideas from the competition, but look at the new XBox interface. Looks like the XMB to me. Look at the Mii like avatars... hmmm, who is rehashing ideas now? I must say I was not impressed by Nintendo or Sony this year either but it is typical Microsoft to take every competitor idea and rehash it into their own system and say "Look at how cool we are, we are so innovative...".

@DK_Chris, “Mii like avatars? ”Ummm….avatars have existed in online communities and in games for over 10 years. They existed long before Nintendo knew about them…and Nintendo had nothing to do with the invention of avatars either. I might also remind you that Microsoft started XBOX Live over 7 years ago, with the original XBOX, at a time when Nintendo kept insisting that video game consoles didn’t need online play. Guess who copied who to online play in video game consoles?

There is an extensive list of comparisons on Eurogamer - this is just round 6 out of more than 12 I believe, but it covers assassins creed and call of duty.

To save you a lot of time and effort. With the exception of Burnout Paradise. 360 comes out on top on just about everything - which is sad, but true.

The End

@20
Nobody copied anybody for online games consoles, it was a natural step that some adopted earlier than others. In fact i believe that SEGA adopted it first for the dreamcast (unless anyone knows otherwise) and look what happened to that.

Actually the Xbox copied the Dreamcast as it was the first console to introduce online playing (with just a few games) while microsoft just copied it and change it a little and claim as their own
