Speculation that Square Enix’s FFXIII decision means a Konami follow-up is inevitable
Honest folk out there would have to admit that literally no-one saw Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIII announcement coming last night – and now talk has turned to what other former PlayStation exclusives could follow suit.
VG247 claims to have heard from a ‘very’ senior UK industry source that it is “inevitable” that Konami will follow Square Enix’s lead in porting one of its last remaining third-party PS3 exclusives to Xbox 360.
“There’s only MGS left now, for a few months at least,” the source stated. “It’s inevitable. Konami knows how many million they’d sell in the US alone. If FFXIII can make it to 360 when Sony owns nine percent of Square, Metal Gear’s a slam dunk.”
Konami’s Kojima Productions has up to now always insisted that MGS4 on Xbox 360 would be impossible, owing to the machine’s reliance on DVD as opposed to Sony’s high-capacity Blu-Ray.

'Mass Suicide'
I hope not as it will result in millions of PS3 fanboys hanging themselves.
Wont happen
"Konami’s Kojima Productions has to now always insisted that MGS4 on Xbox 360 would be impossible, owing to the machine’s reliance on DVD as opposed to Sony’s high-capacity Blu-Ray."
Hideo Kojima had trouble putting (the simply breath-taking) MGS4 on to Blu-Ray in the first place! 4.7gb on a DVD, the game takes up the entire Blu-Ray disc! I still find it unbelievable that xbox releases game with 4+ discs, takes me back to when I used to play 'Beneath a Steal Sky' with like 12 discs! Tut tut.
Also, "Konami’s Kojima Productions has to now always" does that even make sense?!
Re: 'Mass Suicide'
Ben, are you an Xbox fanboy as that is a very poorly written article, it's almost as if you were shaking with so much excitement that you couldn't type properly?
Examples:
..."Konami will follow Square Enix’s lead in porting tis last remaining Xbox 360 exclusive to Xbox 360..."
..."Konami’s Kojima Productions has to now always insisted that MGS4 on Xbox 360 would be impossible"...
Eh?
Just for the record, for a games journalist you're not very clued up! MGS 4 isn't Sony's 'last remaining PS3 exclusive'. There's Gran Turismo 5, Little Big Planet and Tekken 6 for starters.
Ha Ha!
Good to see im not the only one who noticed that! Seems us PS3 users are smarter, just take a look through the forums, its pretty stand out.....
Re: Re: Re: Re: 'Mass Suicide'
I assure you I am not a fan boy of any particular system. I would not be allowed to write for a trade site like MCV if I allowed myself to express any such bias. The piece does state that MGS4 is "one of" PS3s "last remaining third-party PS3 exclusives", which it is.
However, the possibility of big-name console exclusives moving to other systems is huge news for the industry - which is why we covered the PS3 BioShock news, and why we went big on the surprise FFXIII announcement.
And of course, we would also cover it if, say, Epic decided to port Gears of War to PS3 (which I realise will not happen - I'm just illustrating the point).
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 'Mass Suicide'
Two games for the Xbox360: Bioshock, Dead Rising.
These are 360 exclusives.
That is why Dead Rising 2 and Bioshock 2 are coming onto the PS3. Not so exclusive now.
It's all swings and roundabouts
You are all DULL
Get a life. Maybe it will come to the 360 and that would be excellent news if it did. This would mean that more people will be able to play the game. Stop behaving like children.
If you look through forums you're all just as bad as each other, badmouthing each others consoles just because you love your one and the other one is different. A bit like religion or racism. Get a life and enjoy what you have.
And when you look at the blu ray / dvd issue its a null point, if Konami wanted too then they could compress the sounds, the textures etc and make it work because IT WILL MAKE MONEY.
Stop wasting your time arguing with each other and just enjoy your games.
Re: You are all DULL
@ 7,
Well said, finally someone with a bit of sense!!
How popular would it be?
I think that in terms of sales that, although MGS4 would undoubtably earn Konami a bundle of cash if released on 360, it would not see sales anywhere near those it has on PS3.
The current generation of Metal Gear fans are, in the main, Sony fans. It is these people that have experienced Metal Gear as it is today and have followed the series and lapped up its ever convoluting, over complicated story lines. Without this sort of enthusiasm for the series its hard to see as high a percentage of 360 owners buying the game compared to their PS3 owning counterparts.
Konami are undoubtably aware of this and any decision to release the game on 360 will surely take this into account.
Re: How popular would it be?
ADE_1977 is spot on.
Re: Re: How popular would it be?
Agree with ADE, MGS 4 wouldn't be a big hit on 360.
Re: Re: Re: How popular would it be?
That's nonsense - I would say the majority of Metal Gear fans are GAMING fans, not Sony fans. Most of them, much like myself, don't give a hoot which console the game is on. There has got to be millions of 360 owners who haven't forked out on a PS3 who would be gagging to play MGS4.
Re: Re: Re: Re: How popular would it be?
@12
Me being one. I've played all the other MGS in the series, But I just can't justify paying £300 for a PS3 just for MGS4.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: How popular would it be?
Every single big game that was released on both the 360 and PS3, has sold a heck of a lot more on the 360 than the PS3 in the US, even previously PS3 exclusives or timed exclusives like GTA IV. Games like COD 4 and Assassin's Creed sold vastly more on the 360 worldwide than they did on the PS3. It's easy pickings and a no-brainer, for the big Japanese gaming houses to port their big games to the 360, unless they have an aversion to making money, which they don't. The days of Playstation dominance are clearly over.
Multi Disks
The multi disk argument is also becoming a moot point. Major Nelson has stated that 360 Games will be installable on the Hard drive when the new Dash comes out in the fall.
MGS
. . .also I don't belive Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance was a huge success when released on the XBOX. So maybe you do have a point.
Re: MGS
I can hear the gnashing of fanboy teeth already!
Smithy
most multiplat games sell more on PS3 since they dont sell a copy in parts of Asia and europe --regiosn where x360 is dead
x360 is now the least selling console in the world being completely dead in both Japan and europe
DMC4/FIF /PES/DBZ/TOP SPIN all sold more on PS3 worldwide
x360 days are gone. It is a dead console now
MGS4 sold 3m on PS3 in 2 weeks. On the other hand it wont even sell 1m on x360 since it will sell 0 copies on x360 in Japan and perhaps atbest 100k in europe
Stop with this BS article
JRPGS
Right now, the 360 has a heck of a lot more JRPG's, and better JRPG's than either the Wii or the PS3. The addition of FF XIII merely adds to the 360's lead in the JRPG's genre.
Re: JRPGS
Larry, I cannot make any sense of your post. Jeeze.
Re: JRPGS
@ Larry, Give me even 2 examples of any big game that was relsaed on botrh the 360 and PS3, where the PS3 version outsold the 360 verision will ya?
Lets look at the past 12 months alone: GHII, Rock Band, Assassions's Creed, Madden 08, NCAA Football, COD 4, etc etc. Every single one of those games sold vastly more on the 360 than the PS3. It wasn't even close. asian countries? What Asian countries? Outside japan, the 360 has a much bigger installed in every asian country than the PS3. The 360 is ahead of the PS3 in Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore etc.
Re: Re: JRPGS
Larry - the two largest example of multiplatform releases, Call of Duty 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4, both sold more on Xbox 360 than PS3. The only territory where PS3 versions outsell 360 versions is Japan - and that's now by far the smallest gloabal territory. Go figure.
Re: MGS
@9:
So if MGS4 sells 3 million copies on PS3, that is better than 2.5 million on PS3 and 1 million on 360?
By making a game multiformat, more people are able to buy it, which can help sell more copies of a title.
It is simple maths. Yes making a title exclusive for a time can help boost sales initially, but at the end of the day, if there are only 3 million owners of PS3 and 3 million buy copies, allowing the 3 million 360 owners the choice to buy the title can only increase your sales.
(NB: Numbers are purely chosen at random, in case someone decides to make an argument against me with them :)
Re: Re: Re: JRPGS
smithy ur comment made me gag
Seriously are you that behind
See im a huge MGS fan and i dont got the dough to fork over to a PS3 just for MGS and GT5, Which are the only games i want... and maby LBP .
I know alot of my friends have a 360. They all want MGS4 and if it was possible to be released for the 360 that would make us all Jump up and down like little school girls ..... LOL
It would sell Probably better or equal to GTA4 if they could pull it off
BUT now the rumor is that you can put your games on your HD.... Then logiclly they can make MGS4 for a 360
But the truth is... i would rather have it on PC
Re: Re: MGS
Given that the only reason MGS4 'required' BluRay was due to uncompressed audio, I'm sure a lot of folks will survive if they pass the tracks through an MP3 or AC3 compressor.
As a PS3 'fanboy' my main complain has always been the retarded load times and many folks have been complaining about the distinct lack of Codec borne banter.
Hell, the Codec has taken such a back seat in this MGS that in my mind, Kojima was doing what the marketing guys were telling him to do:
Tell everybody the game NEEDS BluRay.
There's no way anybody can explain to me rationally why this game is over 50gb. No, forget it, there's just no reason. Look at Call of Duty 4! Look at Grand Theft Auto 4! Look at Gran Turismo 5! Look at countless other titles and explain to me why MGS3 with all of its content was able to fit on a PS2 DVD?
In all honestly I only expected inasmuch of Konami (and Kojima studios especially) given that I felt the whole uncompression thing was an irresponsible obsession.
No I'm serious! I figure Mr. Kojima just got obsessed with the 'idea' of perfect audio, and ofcourse he's a big bad mother with lots of PS clout, so naturally he's going to justify the five to ten minutes of load time by saying, People Want Perfect Audio.
Screw that! It's irresponsible game development and it's ridiculous that so many designers are forgetting basic principles like gameplay overrides audio. Fun factor, overrides audio.
My time, overrides audio.
I'm glad the 360 is getting a version, because when it comes out on one (if there's two, it'll be an extras disc, mark my words), it's going to cause an uproar among PS3 owners as they watch 360 owners get a largely improved and streamlined version.
Re: Re: Re: MGS
@ Dallas, you are obvoulsy confused, and seriously lacking in comprehension skills. Now why don't you learn to read then get back and read what I said again?
Re: Re: Re: Re: MGS
Remember there is 1 MGS game that does exist on XBOX-1..not backward compatible for 360 mind you, but its not like that road hasnt been crossed already. besides dont feel like spending 500 bucks to play 1 59.99 game..maybe 2 with resistance getting a sequel..
Come to 360!!!, let the haters hate!!..I'll just share the love if it so happens!! I just dont own PS3 because of its priceyness..
COME TO 360, all that coin Konami would get from additional purchasers aint nothing to sneeze at either!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: MGS
I don't think that the capacity of the disc will matter now that there will be the option to install games to the 360 HDD if you want to (If you WANT to being the main point there, not you HAVE to). You'll only then need to use one disc to play the game. Simple.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: MGS
I do hope that it comes to the 360, I have a lot of friends who don't want to buy a PS3 when they already have a 360, me included. I know I'll have to buy one though when ICO team release their new game though. And am I the only one who could tell that FFXIII would be on 360 too? It's not like it wasn't obvious, Square Enix like money and the 360 has a huge installed base, it wouldn't make sense business wise to ignore it.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: MGS
Don't shoot the messenger but this from Sony at E3 -
“PS3 offers an experience for both gamers and developers no other console can match. Metal Gear Solid is not only exclusive on PS3 – it’s only possible on PS3, thanks in part to Blu-Ray.“
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: MGS
Everybody brings up this memory talk. It was stated by the makers of Assassins Creed that they were having memory issues with both consoles. It was stated that the PS3 uses up memory in much different ways than the 360. To push a game out in true 1080p it takes tons of memory. Cable companys will never use that signal because it would lock up the network. Memory will never be the issue, if they wanted to make the game they will, as they should because they will make millions more. Anybody with any sense would not pass up millions to keep little fanboys happy, Please.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: MGS
@25: Thank you Dooley, you just saved me typing the exact same thing.
I bought MGS4 (stupidly) expecting some massive, 50GB gaming experience and what did I get? One of the smallest games I have played in a long time that is cram packed with uncompressed audio.
The textures are average, frequently you can see where they have had to drop the normal maps to get everything into video memory. The models are seriously low poly in many instances, harsh edges where you would normally see chamfered edges. There is nothing in there graphically that screams 50GB. The cut scenes are all in-engine, so there's no pre-rendered FMV to store.
If anything, MGS4 is the first game I have seen that highlights the deficiencies in the PS3 architecture more than any other game out there. On the rails action sections that have to load data after 15 seconds... and then again... and again. That's poor, it breaks the flow of the game and screams poor development. Compare that to something like Uncharted, R&C or Heavenly Sword for instance... or even GTA4, all of which are vastly bigger in content but suffer none of the "loading..." issues.
Considering they got Mass Effect on the 360 with 20,000+ lines of dialogue, there would be no problem with the speech... which means it must be just the music that is eating up all that space. Is that a reason to justify Blu-Ray? I think not... It's certainly not a reason to claim "other machines can't handle the game", not unless you're a deluded developer that is.
Anyone who knows anything about game development will tell you the exact same thing, that game would go on a DVD9 in a breeze.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: MGS
@31: "To push a game out in true 1080p it takes tons of memory."
Really, please explain why you think this?
The textures are no different at 720p to 1080p, the sound is no different, the models are no different... the only thing that is different is the buffer that the output gets rendered to, that's it. If you change resolution on your PC games, do you have to double your RAM to do it?
"Cable companys would never use that signal because it would lock up the network...."
So it uses more memory at rendering time, how is that going to affect cable companies?
Could it just be perhaps, that you don't actually understand how things work... maybe?
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: MGS
just to put one thing right mgs is not a Sony excusive Nintendo got it first, Sony got the second instalment as the Nintendo could not handle the game that was until the game cube which we got to see a revamp of shadow mosses, then mgs3 went back on the ps2 as the game was much bigger. the point that I'm getting at is that mgs has all ways gone onto the most powerful consol (not best consol) you all argue over games being solely on 1 machine but a good percent of these game's started off on the NES or are game's cloned from 1980's and 90's games, I'm not sure why so many ppl express there devotion to there games machine and the company that made them as all you get back in return is over priced games and over priced accessories, look most ppl like Nintendo followed by PS/Xbox some ppl cant afford the ps3 and go for the 360, some ppl don't like the ring of death and go for the latter. I could under stand if you got paid for backing them but you don't (I'd back them if I had the wage the Coe's of the three companies had lol) I all so see a lot of things where ppl say that Xbox has sold more units than ps well that's a no brainier isn't it as the Xbox was out 12 months or so before ps and now they are copying Sony over 60gb hard drive, blue ray add on, and new games to suit the new wand controller that being made mmmm I wonder were they got the idea for that one???? And I wonder why the fan boys/girls don't compare xbox/ps3 to the outrageous sales of the wii !!!! And just to make it clear saga, Xbox & playstation have copied from Nintendo for years, just something to think about!!!!!!! I wonder who will bring out there version of wii fit first
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: MGS
what does it matter anyway, until this is confirmed why even argue. As pointed out the game will not fit on a dvd and would need 2 HD-DVDs to hold 50gb of content. So unless Microsoft bring out a blu-ray external drive which does not seem to be happening, or unless they want to bring back the HD-DVD drive, which has never had a game release and was just a film player, i do not see how this game will be released on 360. Its not economincal for a 12 disc edition, maybe a 6 disc dual layer edition but it wont happen. Lets start another rumour, maybe MGS 5 is in production for the next generation of xboxs. With todays high defintition tv's they could call is xbox1080p
MGS 4???
I have a question why are you ps fanboys hanging on to mgs game like a security blanket,i mean c'mon. If it comes to xbox (which it eventualy will) what then??? then all of this was for nothing. If Sony is so powerful why dont they just by rights to xbox's exclusives aswel?? Cause game designers know that PS3 is a dead console which too over priced. dont ge me wrong the blu ray is the best thing yet.. but, almost no one can afford it right now
the only reason blu ray won the format war is that Sony pictures own most of the blockbuster movies.. go figure, as if ppl admire every pixel in the pupil of carmen electra's eye.. ect ect ect... get my drift at the end of the day ppl just wanna save more money, to live comfortable to they're needs, for all we know team kojima could already be busy with compression engines to make MGS4 fit on 4 DVD9.. The technology is insane in todays world, dont limit your point of view just to try and win a arguement.
And if it doesnt come to Xbox then so what, We arleady have FFXIII, it made my day when i read that article let me tell you :) and its probably 5 times longer as MGS4 , and FMV's for the world not to mention the dialogue... so stop your excuses of blu ray copacity. Compression is the key to every game designers ability. And with a strong company as Konami, they'll suprize us all. and i qyote from a convrence held at the release of MGS4 reporter:"is there any chance that mgs 4 will come to the xbox 360"
Hideo kojima's assistant:"There is no plans for MGS 4 coming to Xbox 360.... yet...." If it wasnt coming to xbox they would of said not a chance or, heck do pigs fly???
Re: MGS 4???
dvd might be back with 14 to 16 layers... 4.7 x 16 = 75.2gigs... that is more then dual layer Blu-Ray disc
Re: Re: MGS 4???
Do you guys not realize this is only a speculation? Someone for the UK said basically will probably happen just because Square did it...
Re: Re: Re: MGS 4???
dont be stupid
Dual-Layer DVD9 = 18GB
Which means MGS4 would only be 3 discs and they would most likely compress it down to 2.
And why does everybody cry about swapping a ****in disc? Stop being bitches and enjoy the games.
Though I already own MGS4 and a PS3 i would buy it again for 360
MGS wont be on x360
Shadows are you retarted a DVD Dual layer is 8.4gb jackass
And plus im a x360 owner and no offence guys but if MGS4 was coming to 360 Hideo would of announced it at E3
FACTS!
it is possible, no doubt compression is the only thing standing in Konami's way to make even more money and expanding they're fan base. But if they wanna be blind sided by Sony's loyalty so be it. They just lost a fan
Re: MGS wont be on x360
It's definitely possible for the 360 to run Metal Gear Solid 4. Kojima has stated in interviews that he did not bother with data compression for the PS3 because the disc maxed out at 50gb. There was no need for it. With major compression, an HDD install, and 2 discs, the game would run on the 360 no problem.
Re: Re: MGS wont be on x360
Sony are gonna release God of War, Tekken for the the 360 Yay. I am a proud 360 fan. People who own sony's have no sense of humour and no girlfriends.
C'Mon fangirls dish out the abuse
MGS 4 on 360... even that worth it?
I have been reading article after article about Metal Gear Solid Four and it being so great and it would far most the greatest marketing stratiegy ever, although it would great, but, where did the Metal Gear Solid tradition go?
Seriously!
Metal Gear Solid Three was far most the best, with the most amazing gameplay ever seen on the face of the earth at the time! Camoflouge System, Food/Stanima System, and the AI was amazing.
Then there was Metal Gear Solid One, the orgional one. One of the most revolutional games ever developed! Guards being able to hear you and see your steps in snow? Who ever would have thought of that for a PlayStaton game?
Now, we are at Metal Gear Solid Four. Does it even include any stealth in it at all? You run into rooms fighting soliders with a rocket laucher! Seriously! Where did the stealth go?
If they were going to make a Metal Gear Solid game with only fighting in it, they should have called it something else. And NOT ruin the Metal Gear Tradition.
Re: Re: Re: MGS wont be on x360
lol damn i really dont know what the bigdeal is mgs4 came to 360. you guys act like its the end of the world. you all sound like you hav nothing better in your life than just to bitch about metal gear going to 360. your nerdsssss!!!!!!
Re: Re: Re: Re: MGS wont be on x360
Guys.. it's not happening any time soon. Konami/Kojima Productions didn't announce it, this is all a rumor, so leave it at that.. a rumor. Ignore it untill its confirmed by the dev team. Maybe they'll release an alternate version of MGS4, much like Square is doing for Final Fantasy 13.
What is stopping them from doing it?
Why don't they just make a BETA for Xbox..
I know they won't be able to fit the game onto 1 disc, but they can atleast fit it into 3 or 4.. It's not like we care if we have to swap the disc over now and then, to resume playing.
I have a PS3 & Xbox, so I don't mind if it happens or not.
But I know for a fact, that alot of MGS fans have a Xbox, so they would get alot of sales for it.
Why don't they just try it? They will make alot more than they made in the first few weeks of the release on the ps3.
