E3 08: ‘This is the year of PS3’

SCEA CEO Jack Tretton kicks off press conference with bold claims about console’s prospects

Sony Computer Entertainment of America CEO Jack Tretton has kicked off today’s E3 press conference in LA by telling a packed auditorium: “This is the year of the PS3” and boasting that PS3 has “the biggest exclusives in the industry.”

Tretton (pictured) promised the crowd that the company was “just getting started” and “only scratching the surface” of the company's ten-year plan for the system – pointed at the Sony's successes with the long lifecycles of PSOne and PS2.

He announced:

“The PlayStation brand is really hitting its stride, with a line-up that features the biggest exclusives in the industry.

“2008 is the year of PS3, but we’re just getting started. We’ve just begun to scratch the service of what we plan to deliver ahead. The seeds were sewn 15 years ago this week, on July 20th – when we faced the red light or green light about whether the company should make its own console.

“We wanted more intense, more vivid and more powerful our customers could expect different, because we expected something different.

"What really made Sony different is we took a longer look ahead.”

He added: “Two years ago, we had another ten-year vision with PS3… If we’d have asked them is they needed all this power, they may have said no. But as Henry Ford once said, if I’d have asked my customers what they wanted, they’d have said: ‘A faster horse.’”

“PS3 offers an experience for both gamers and developers no other console can match.“

What are chances...

@Hnbeanz
Very little chance of sensible comments I reckon. Sony fanboys slated the "360 Will beat PS3" article so you'll no doubt get this one full off 360 fanboys.

" If we’d have asked them is they needed all this power, they may have said no."

You could say by continuing to buy the wii in such massive quantities that many people are saying they don't need all that power....

I have been a proud PS3 owner since 1/1/2007...my 60GB has treated my 24 PS3 games and 73 Blu-ray movies with great respect and unparalleled performance...
However, today marks the day 360 wins the next gen war...my hat is off to M$...and I am off to buy the 120GB since price cut makes it that much more attractive...especially with all of the RPGs on the system...who would have thought 360 would have more RPGs than PS3...what a messed up couple of days...still in shock...worst news ever!
The only good news is, those spineless punks over at Blu-ray.com just saw the end of hard media as PS3 has now guaranteed downloaded movies will kill the short-lived Blu-ray success...let's face it, if you want to watch movies, own PS3, if you want family fun, own a Wii, if you want to play games, own 360...

One more thing...this is the year of the PS3 alright...it's the year they gave up on gaming dominance...

FF13 walked away and Sony did nothing to prevent it...Sony has truly let me down...I feel so betrayed! I wanted PS3 dominance to guarantee slew of great games...I mean, even in 2008 E3 Sony talked about PS2...why? More exclusives than you can count in your head!

Sony-I am done with you...Square-I am done with you...

Sony did nothing to counter M$...M$ earned my respect...for the first time...M$ has earned my respect...

I'll have to admit, Sony didn't have that bombshell announcement what-so-ever, they were telling the attendees nothing they didn't already know.
My boss is over there at the moment (as I work in retail) and he agrees. I just hope Leipzeig (did I spell that right? :D ) might offer something new on the software front.

Such idiots with all this fanboyism. Do you know why fanboys exist, because the majority of people playing games are children who are easily gullible with Microsoft vs Sony Sony vs Microsoft, as well as immature adults. Another theory is that people are really upset because the cannot afford both, so they bash the other. If it made sense for me to have both or all of them, then I would, but it doesn't. Quit being so caught up with senseless chit chat people. Treat your console like an investment. Research before you buy and then just be happy with the decision. Respect the fact that both Sony and Microsoft make great games and not everyone will be pleased with every game. I bought my console, knowing that I would not be investing my time and money on other consoles. Oh well, I am happy with my choice. So what if the other console(s) comes out with a great game that I cannot play. Either buy the other console or just suck it up, but have some dignity about it. Fanyboyism has totally ruined the the idea behind critics, magazines, and forums, because now there is no integrity in what is said or printed these days.

Er, I'm lost. Besides David, who quite clearly likes his PS3, not one post on this article bashed either system. Why so angry? Crack open a Stella, and chill :D

Agree with Michael. Both machines have their strengths and weaknesses regardless of what fanboys say tbh.

My post stems from a comment that was made about respect being lost in one company and gained in another, all because, Square Enix decides to go multi-console for FF. Get a grip. If you have been around long enough, you should know that these things happen in the gaming industry "world" and when it comes down to it, it is a business, not a battle. What kind of counter would one expect when the announcement was just made from Square Enix? But the person that made the comment, oh yeah, he is done with Sony right. Whaaaaatttttttt does that mean, really? Are you selling/trashing/giving away your console, because of Final Fantasy going to the XBox360. It's not like you can no longer play it on your Sony console. What do you care if someone else will get to enjoy it on another console. These kind of selfish and mindless posts just annoy the hell out me. If I seem angry, I'm not, just annoyed at how all posts typically and consistently seem to lead to the same old "I don't really know what I am talking about, Taste Great, Less Filling" chit chat, especially when it's from people who just don't realize that this is business as usual and things like losing exclusivity or claiming exclusivity is apart of the business. I hardly ever, if never post, so my posts here today are for all the times that I have seen such bogus nonsense and took the high road by not posting. Today, I am on the low road and I believe I have done my best to keep it clean. If anything, I am not attacking, I am not on a bandwagon, just wish the consensus of people showed a little more common sense with a dash of intelligence. Don't view it as being angry, instead think about what I am saying and either agree or don't. Either way, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo will still exist in the morning.

E3 2008

Well, it seems 360 had the best showing all round this year. Their show covered all well known concerns eg improved live service, less 'clunky', avatars, netflix etc

A hardware price reduction and a hard drive upgade also very welcome.

More exclusives, new IP's, big guns like GOW2 and downloadable content also good showing.

Overall I'm impressed with 360 showing.

PS3 showing was sadly dissapointing. Expected Sony to blow the doors off with Home, which didnt happen : (

Movie downloads great but comparitively underwhelming next to 360 offering.

Price drop was expected, but good to see.

Wasn't blown away by games line-up. I really was expecting to see a LOT more from PS3, as this is the year they really need to impress.

Wii....well, not much there. Rather poor showing. For being Market leader as far as hardware sales go, they should be all guns blazing. Instead they seem to me...lazy.

Wasn't the most inspring conference from Sony, certainly not after the Microsoft bombshell. Still, as long as their consoles continue to sell and make my business money I'll let them worry about MS and Nintendo.

From a gamers perspective I'm just looking foward to playing Tekken 6 and Gran Turismo 5, all this willy-waving is of no concequence.

some nice titles overall really but nothing in my view that make either platform a clear leader, ok 360 cheaper gears of war 2 more halo crap etc, ps3 online free, MAG, resistance etc stuff everyone knew about, more expensive than 360 and wii, most games multi platform,so i cant see anything that pushing potential customers to any 1 platform,
weak E3 overall really, not alot of fresh announcements, no assassins 2, dead rising 2, new Elder scrolls etc,
just ok stuff that most people already knew about it think.
