E3 08: No other handheld can match PSP, says Tretton

SCEA boss talks up PSP; Resistance Restribution and Ratchet and Clank bundle revealed

Jack Tretton has told the global media that no other handheld can match the PSP at Sony’s E3 ’08 Media Briefing.

Having termed 2008 the ‘year of the PS3’ before unveiling several new PSN features, the SCEA boss moved on to talk about PSP, and revealed new title Resistance Retribution alongside a new ‘entertainment pack’ that includes Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters and a copy of movie National Treasure to go on sale in the US for $199 later this year.

He also took a little time out to have a dig at handheld rival Nintendo, stating: “From a portable gaming perspective, there is no equal. PSP is an offering that no other handheld can match.”

I reckon 75 million sales vs. 35 million sales suggests the DS is more than holding its own ;-)

exactly
i like the psp as a device, but this is a comment only a tool would make. sony is losing on sales and s/w and i hardly think resistance is going to turn the tide...

@ JW, The PSP has been outselling the DS in Japan for nearly 7 months, and is still outselling the DS by 10,000 units every single week, according to Media Create figures.. The PSP experienced a massive surge in sales last year after the introduction of the new PSP's, and sales have still not gone down. Meanwhile, DS sales in Japan are sharply lower than what they were last year.

Hey Smithy,

What you say is true, however Japan is just one country not an indicator of worldwide sales, which show the DS to be still outselling the PSP by at least 200,000+ units each month.

The PSP still sells very well here in Europe, it's biggest downfall is Sony's apparent lack of promoting the unit and it'a features to the mainstream. I think it may actually of been a very different picture in the sales of PSP Vs NDS had the massmarket consumer known what the machine was fully capapble of. Outstrip NDS? Probably not, but the PSP may of looked a lot healthier next to the NDS in Europe and the UK.

Dont forget the PSP sales are only strong for the console but not the games due to the fact people are hacking them and playing games copied onto the memory card. If this piracy was halted then the console would hardly sell. FACT

Don't forget to take into account that most people who are interested in owning a handheld, most likely already own a DS. So just because sales are not as high as they used to be, that doesn't mean people don't value the console.

@ 6

You could level the same argument at the NDS, especially in light of the R4 cards. I could show you the attach rate of games Vs NDS units sold, it's quite shocking. I've had to hold back on ordering as many full price software units simply because people are getting their grubby hands on R4 cards, (thanks to a few as$hole indies stocking them), and download any game they want, for free.

ds and psp are both really good it just i rather get psp because when it comes to games psp and ds has psp wins
because the gameplay on ds sucks ds is only good at their own games psp is good at their own games and games on every consle like for example madden 09 is good on psp but 100% precent sucks on ds only people who cant afford no consle play madden on ds or cant afford psp

Ah yes, nothing can touch the PSP... Nothing else has a screen so useless in daylight, nothing else is so big and heavy, nothing else has such a rubbish battery life...I can see how people would want to copy those features.

And hey, that new shorter battery life is bound to be a big selling point for the PSP3000. It's gonna be great for watching TV shows on really short train journeys.

The PSP is home to homebrew and emulators galore, that's why it sells. it would never survive if it had to rely on PSP games. You could count the decent games on two hands and you could fill a bin with the rest. It's the best Sega handheld that Sega never had.

@9: Blah... blah...blah...sucks...sucks...sucks... Give it a rest already! Learn to spell, learn to puctuate and above all, grow up.

I tell ya, Sony should copyright the word "sucks", it seems to be the buzz word of the Sony fanboys.
