Huge success of DS and Wii has prompted me-too product from competitors, says platform holder
Nintendo has stated at its E3 Media Briefing that the success of Wii and DS has led to ‘imitators’ trying to re-create the features that have made Nintendo’s platforms the market leaders.
Both Nintendo president Satoru Iwata and US boss Reggie Fils-Aime took a swipe at companies that the platform holder believes is ‘re-producing’ its ideas.
Iwata kicked things off by stating: “There is still work to be done breaking down barriers. We know from experience that even if an idea is revolutionary, people still get bored of it – this happens even more if people try to re-produce what has been done before.”
“We at Nintendo always challenge ourselves to be pioneers. We hope you enjoy the ones we have today.”
Wrapping up Nintendo’s E3 Media Briefing, US boss Reggie Fils-Aime cheekily added: “It’s inevitable that when the paradigm shifts, imitation is just around the corner. The next challenge is to disrupt your own thinking.”
In case you missed it, there was plenty more from today’s Nintendo E3 Media Briefing at the Kodak Theatre – three major new first party titles Wii Sports Resort, Wii Music and Animal Crossing: City Folk were unveiled, while the surprise announcement that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars would be heading to DS this year certainly raised a lot of eyebrows.

Nintendo immitated others too
That's a bit rich coming from Nintendo, isn'y it? Given that Nintendo , which used t0o be a card company, started off by copying/immitating the very concept of a video game, which was started by Nolan Bushnell, and outfits like Comodore, Atari etc. When did Nintendo invent anything? Even the wimmote was copied from an American form called Gyration, from who they obtained a license for the Wiimote.
Re: Nintendo immitated others too
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Nintendo-the great innovators of other peoples ideas.
Re: Re: Nintendo immitated others too
Yep, you invented the infra-red motion controller Sega released for the Genesis in 92 that had an air-drum game demoed at trade shows in 92-93, you invented all those PS2 motion controllers, those Golf controllers, Mario Kart wasn't a clone of power drift etc.etc.
Oh and there's a thing called the Uforce for the Nes made by Broderbund about 20 years ago, it was rubbish but I reckon it beat you lot to the motion controller punch let alone whatever Atari had going on in their labs before that.
