Riccitiello: ‘I hated E3 2008’

EA boss slams trade event’s current format as Ubisoft’s North American boss calls it ‘terrible’

EA CEO John Riccitiello has slammed the format of this year’s E3, stating that he “hated” last week’s show.

"I hate E3 like this," said Riccitiello, speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle.

"Either we need to go back to the old E3, or we'll have to have our own private events."

Riccitiello’s disappointment has been shared by Ubisoft’s North American president Laurent Detoc, who added:

"E3 this year is terrible. The world used to come to E3. Now it's like a pipe-fitters show in the basement.”

Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto has already stated that the firm no longer considers E3 the place to demonstrate titles for a ‘hardcore’ audience.

People complaining about change. There's a shock.

Anyway, I can't see companies having their own events being of any help to people other than the big publishers. It smacks of just another way of marginalising small/independent studios.

In their press conference Microsoft talked about this being a $48M industry, bigger than music, bigger than movies etc etc...
...if that is the case, surely this "showcase" is not the best we can do Stateside?
Roll on Leipzig.

E3 snubbed much of the gaming community by making the event invitation only. As a result, much of the gaming community started ignoring it. Smaller venues like GenCon, Penny Arcade, and the Game Developer's Conference emerged as friendly, open events where info on upcoming games could be distributed viraly.

I'm not sure whose bright idea it was to cut E3 to nothing, but aren't corporate executives are supposed to be paid to think about this kind of stuff?
