Head-strapped device will ‘replace joysticks and Wii handles’, says Daily Mail
The Daily Mail has reported that one of the greatest innovations of all time will be upon us this year – thought controlled gaming.
An article in the newspaper, which will no doubt inspire a fair amount of cynicism from hardened gamers, says that a new headset has been designed by Australian company Emotiv – containing 16 sensors that measure brain activity.
According to the story: ‘The EPOC headset has 16 sensors which measure electrical activity in the brain, allowing players to push and pull objects on a screen just by thinking.
‘Despite scepticism among some experts, Emotiv - the Sydney-based company behind the headset - claims it has carried out pre-release tests which show that the electroencephalography process works.’
Emotiv co-founders Allan Snyder, a neuroscientist and former Cambridge University research fellow, and Tan Le are confident the technology can take gaming from the Wii to the next stage.
Tan Le said: “This is the tip of the iceberg. There will be a convergence of gesture-based technology and the brain as a new interface – the Holy Grail is the mind.”
The newspaper adds that the headset ‘could replace joysticks and Wii handles’.

Am i bothered
Hmm, if i sneeze while playing gears of war the worst that happens is my eyes close for a split second ... but if you do it while wearing this thing you could reload at the wrong time and get anihilated lol.
In all seriousness though there's a clip on youtube of a professor (i believe) using a head mounted wii-mote and sensor bar combo to make demos that are make objects appear to come out of the screen at you in relation to your head. Thats something i can see taking off in a big way, especially for shooting games :D but not this. Btw the youtube vid is def work checking out, not sure of the name, something to do with VR and wii-motes.
Re: Am i bothered
I believe it was actually a student (could be wrong) but you are right, his stuff is pretty impressive. If we're thinking of the same person, he also has a demo of a "minority report" type interface. Interesting stuff. When I last checked he still hadn't been snapped up by a games developer. A true shame.
As for this, what do the daily mail know of video games? If this was going to hit retail this year, with true games connected to it, me doubts the daily mail would be the one with the scoop.
I can see it taking off eventually, but not for a while.

Mmmm, 'thinks' , it can't true if its in the Daily Mail!
Re: Re: Re: Am i bothered
The same bit of kit was mentioned as part of an article in a recent monthly lifestyle magazine. Forget the name of the mag, but I saw it on sale at a motorway service station last weekend. ^^
Re: Re: Re: Am i bothered
I am pretty sure the latest Edge magazine has an article on this or something similar already - something I read recently does anyways.
I assume the cynicism referred to amongst gamers, is whether or not this would actually work properly - however, maybe it is just me and my resistance to change, but even if it did work perfectly I still think I would prefer some sort of interaction ie using a control pad. Would feel a bit odd sitting there doing nothing but thinking...probably fall asleep!
I am sure there is more to it than this, and understand early versions would require a combination of thought control and control interfaces, but am really not in the least bit excited yet.
Also - why are we trying to take away such interaction as the Wii remote, when it is this sort of interface that is meant to have revolutionised gaming (amongst the casual gamers at least) - i thought the whole concept of swinging a virtual raquet is what makes this so much more fun for some people ? Not just thinking I want to swing a racquet....
It would solve some issues however, like in some shooters where an innocent person suddenly appears on the screen that you get penalised if you shoot, and you think to yourself no, I shouldnt shoot...but then your body reacts anyways and presses the button and it is goodbye "mother holding baby" or whatever etc. Sometimes what we think and what our body does under pressure are two different things.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Am i bothered
Could be a good way to access menus, weapons change in games etc, then use the regular controlling system for the actual action movements like shooting.
if it got rid of the text input it would be even better!
