Microsoft: Rivals have been slacking off

Sony and Nintendo's E3 performance shows they've ‘been on an extended vacation’ says Xbox boss

Don Mattrick has told MCV he is confident that Microsoft ‘won’ E3 this year – and has even accused Sony and Nintendo of slacking off over the past year.

In assessing his rivals’ E3 conferences, he said: “I think we got more than 12 months’ work done, and others went on an extended vacation. Hopefully they got some good vacation photos, because they sure weren't showing up at work.”

“Of course I'm going to be biased, but so far what I've heard is that Sony and Nintendo have disappointed. And Microsoft has been leading, innovating and driving a very comprehensive global programme.”

“We're building momentum and we're on a scale that no other consumer electronics company or entertainment company has been able to achieve in nine years. It's been a very good show and I'm very pleased with what we've been able to accomplish. I think there was a lot of good work, a lot of innovation and a lot of news from us.”

Well, when you look at Sony's & Nintendo's performance, you can only agree with him.

LOL, so Microsoft quickly knocks off some Mii-toos, a SingStar rip-off and shows a bunch of games we've already seen, and that amounts to a year's work.
The Netflix thing is nice, but without the FFXIII bombshell, Microsoft would've had the worst showing of the lot.

I imagine the FFXIII 'bombshell' would and could have been replaced with the mysterious cancelled Halo/Bungie announcement, so fair enough to them, I honestly believe Microsoft had a good E3.

Microsoft spin it again

Aye, in terms of innovation, the change to the dashboard was there, but lets talk about new games - Sony announced MAG, Fat Princess, GoW III, R&C: Quest for Booty and a bunch of good looking PSP games and Microsoft announced.... that it was ripping off Singstar and Miis, and had managed to also get a game that had been well and truly announced - and both companies announced online video rental services. Nintendo was also innovative, and although it's not my cup of tea, the Wii and DS are looking alright. As is more and more the case, Microsoft's all talk and no action - they may be able to get away with their style over substance approach in a market where they have a monopoly (think Vista and Office 2007), but where there's a competitive market, they just end up looking like has-beens. The above only discusses announcements at E3 - if you look at up-and-coming games, then Microsoft is looking pretty thin on the ground relative to Sony, and I'd trade Resistance2, Infamous, MAG, Killzone2, Motorstorm:PR, Flower, for Gears of War 2, Fable 2 and Too Human any day of the week. The 360 is still a good platform, but talking down their rivals (and calling rip-offs innovation!) when they're clearly on the back foot and looking like the English cricket team early in the decade facing Glenn McGrath in his prime makes them look like right dills.

The funny thing about the FFXIII news that MS folk don't seem to get is that there wasn't any Sony FFXIII news at E3 - the game is still coming to the PS3. I have no trouble with it arriving on the 360 (indeed, if there are 360 gamers who want to play FFXIII, I want third parties to release it for them - gaming is about having fun, not denying others entertainment! But on that note, it tends to be MS that will pay money to prevent material coming out on other platforms, while Sony has invested in quality in-house development), but calling that innovation is like calling bringing Bioshock or Oblivion to the PS3 innovation.

I think that all of the "big three" are innovating, but each of them is innovating to different degrees.

Microsofts true innovations are the new dashboard, as it's nice and intuitive and looks a lot cleaner than the old blades system, and the new exclusive games that are coming to it. I don't think that you can call Lips or the Avatars innovations, as Lips is really just a copy of Singstar (albeit with different mechanics) and avatars just seem like a copy of Miis. This kind of thing has been prevalent in the computer industry for years, with microsoft and apple continuously copying features off of the other's product.

I think that if Microsoft had given some time for Bungie, then they would have "won" E3, as it would have been a bigger bomb than any of the other two could have mustered. In my opinion Sony had the best showing as far as innovative products go. If they had elaborated a bit more on MAG, then that would have been good, but their new stuff showed the most promise.

I agree that bringing games to multiple platforms is a good thing but you've got the Sony and MS bit mixed up. Its MS who have invested in a lot of teams and brought them into their development area not to mention the XNA workshops they are providing for younger developers (the future developers).

Sony however have kept most dev teams in the dark with a very complicated dev kit and they deserve to suffer for this as they have a great machine but really need to build a community around it of not just gamers but game developers too.

Between this and the whole Bungie stuff, I'm getting the impression that Mr. Mattrick is rather pompous, and..well..a bit full of **** really.

I agree about Nintendo, but Sony's another matter. They showed tonnes of games at their conference and had, I think, the game of the show quite easily. I think Mattrick might be just a little uncomfortable that Sony continues to outsell them this year, and has a better looking slate through the holidays and into early next year.

MS really need to learn how to be mature ,Its really sad that neither Sony nore Nintendo try to belittle each other or MS but yet every chance Microsoft gets they alway slam sony and the sad part is its never true,I would like to see how they think they would do if they had all the things going on thay Sony does,Sony develops ALOT of games and has ALOT of other branches whats Microsoft gave? windows,Xbox360..They have developed how many games? 2 ? and they have money ...Which they use to steal and buy out developers just for them to make games for them.Its sad that they actually need to PAY to have games made for them..

DM needs to cool it. It's arrogant and incorrect statements like these that plague Sony today. The 360 borrowed the new dashboard from Vista and truly isn't innovating. Now Ubisoft using 3d in games and TI processing two images on one screen is innovation. Convincing a foreign developer to publish a multi-console game is not innovation.

I really wanted more from MycroSoft but I was disappointed. Third party developers will deliver while the first party offerings (4) will dominate sales. However, I don't think MS has that 1st party title to win over the masses like a LittleBigPlanet. I can only wish. I know I spelled MS incorrectly above. It was intentional

This is Microsofts main event it's no wonder that they won. Sony and Nintendo only showed 1 new game for E3 cuz they know E3 sucks now and are waiting to show what they really waiting show their real stuff at TGS and Leipzig. I guess M$ didn't get the memo to not show your ace in the hole at E3, but to wait for better events.

@ka0znrky

I agree totally that MS biggest innovation this generation is to provide much better support for developers - indeed, IMO that's why they're doing as well as they are. However, it's not really anything that was showcased at this E3, so I don't think we can use that to back up Don's comments. But I do agree that MS has likely ushered in a new era of console support for developers that will likely benefit all of us gamers in the future - I just don't think they had a particularly brilliant E3 (from the perspective of a PS3 user, they announced nothing I couldn't play already (Singstar for Lips or Eyetoy for Codies movie game) or won't be playing in the near future - note that Gears/Fable were already announced by this stage - same couldn't be said of the Sony or Nintendo showings) - and the XMB and the store are, IMO, already pretty good interfaces.

@liam999

I'm not sure where you're at here - from memory, it was Nintendo that got cold feet and decided to go it alone (ie, Nintendo backed away from Sony, not the other way around), and then Sony thought they'd continue with the project. The original PSX also had quite different games to the N64, as the Cube had to the PS2 and the Wii has to the PS3. But at the end of the day, competition is good - we wouldn't the brilliant range of games today if we didn't. I just think childish comments from Don Mattrick, when they are clearly false, don't make us as gamers look very good, and only serve to confuse the industry and public rather than further the development of quality games.

No what really happened was Nintendo did get a little bit of cold feet but Sony pulled the rug from under their feet with some copyrighting thing, but i can't remember the whole story just look it up on IGN as to how Sony tried to screw over Nintendo with the disc thing.

I just can't believe how much the people on here still back Sony and the PS3. I have always been a Sony "Fanboy" and own both the xbox and PS3 but from a GAMERS perspective the PS3 is still dormant and the 360 rules wihtout any doubt. I keep hoping the PS3 will awaken but all we get is empty promises, updates that don't work etc

On the innovation front Microsoft are giving their console owners what they want. Whether you like it or not the dashboard update is a big thing - the avatars are just a small part of this all they do is take the place of the current gamer picture. what about the 8 way chat while watching a film from my recall my PS3 still can't properly handle 1 to 1 chat !!!!! any all this about lips and sigstar I honestly cant remember you being able to plug your ipod into a PS3 and use your own music - but i stand to be corrected !!! and on top of all this MS have kept all their own exclusives and gained some of Sonys - Sounds like a pretty good E3 to me for them and 360 owners

Seriously guys I hope as much as the next person that the PS3 is a Sleeping Giant in the console wars about to awaken but until that time it makes a nice shiney book end !! While the real gaming happens on the 360

Sorry guys but at heart you all know what I have said is true what ever side of the fence you currently sit

I find it funny that a lot of the big names were complaining that E3 was a rubbish show anyway, but MS and Sony are still arguing over who put out the best show.

Nintendo probably are on vacation. 2 years of genuine innovation, winning over whole new demographics and counting all the money they've made from being the most successful company of this generation is probably quite tiring work.

All I can say is im shocked that you honestly believe that and would ask the question if you own or have ever even used a 360 as I'm sure at that point you would understand my comments. If I did not believe the PS3 will eventually get there I would not have wasted £300+ of my money buying one would I.

I mean take for example trophys - at present there is only one game you can get them in and there really is only so much Super stardust you can play (and yes im speaking from experiance), yet MS have had the gamerscore system running for as long as I can remember, its old hat, sony should have had a load of games ready with patches at release and loads of games now with support to make it something to shout about. Yes I know Bioshock is coming to the PS3 at the end of the year but the 360 will be getting the sequal shortly after that so its not really anything to shout home about to be fair is it. As far as i was aware there are no video/film downloads on the Uk store and won't be until 2009 again Sony showing they are behind the game MS get theirs in the last qtr of this year. The in game XMB is a joke and honestly what do you use it for other than ending your game ???? Until cross game invites and chat are introduced its worthless.

I am certain if Sony pull their finger out, introduce these sort of things, quickly, that todays gamer wants and demands, it will become the console of choice but until then for anyone who owns both consoles and is serious about gaming, in particular online communicating with other people, the PS3 will continue to gather dust.

Seriously look at things like the World Cyber Games - No PS3 I wonder why that is ??
