Sony: PS3 Home launch date 'doesn’t matter'

SCE’s global president promises consumers will love online service... whenever it arrives

Sony has told MCV that the launch date of PS3 Home ultimately “doesn’t matter” – but predicted that the full service will be available in a “reasonable timeframe”.

However, speaking exclusively to MCV, Sony Computer Entertainment global president Kaz Hirai reiterated that the service’s Beta was still on course for an Autumn launch.

He added that he was certain that Home would “really resonate with consumers” whenever it arrived – and that Microsoft’s recently improved online service wouldn’t be able to compete, even if it became available to gamers first.

Speaking to MCV, Hirai said:

“I’d much rather make sure we take the time to have a great service rather than rush something into the market – only for consumers to say: “This is not enough for me.” I want to avoid that. If we have the right service, it doesn’t matter when we launch – so long as it’s in a reasonable timeframe.”

He added: “Whether our competitors decide to follow what we’ve done with Home or not follow us, that’s up to them. Given the fact that I’ve delayed the launch of Home twice – for which I’ve apologised – I think I’ve done it for a very good reason, and that’s because I want to bring the very best service possible to consumers around the world.

“We’re very confident in when we do launch the open Beta service, it’s something that will really resonate with the consumers.”

Of course it doesn't matter, because once the open beta is launched that IS the launch. The service is always evolving and changing with each month, so essentially the product is always in beta, always changing.

Prepared to wait for this, I want Sony to get it right. I'm sure it will obliterate the 360's Wii/iTouch ripoff interface..

Wow how much did you pay for the crystal ball that allows you to look into the future Mark? How the heck can anybody know that it will obliterate anything? Sony fan boys are so... Special.

This is stupid, they are going to release it as a beta and then continually add to it, improving it, so it will always be a beta of sorts. But if they can't even release it on time then that means its not even ready for a beta release.

I wouldn't mind it if they were taking all this time to release a finished product but they aren't, so they really need to shut up about it until its ready because every time they bring it up they make themselves look very incompetent

I can wait also. It's better to release a product that is well rounded, rather than a half arsed product that needs to be updated every half hour. I've seen it happen first hand, it doesn't go down well with customers! 10 years on and there still talking about our mistake.

@4. Mark didn't say it WILL obliterate xbox's effort, he said he's sure, an opinion one might say. Xbox fans etc....

I hate all this "so and so is ripping them off"

That is such a crazy statement. It's a pathetic arguement, as you all so put it. They must all be "ripping" each other off.

"360's wii/iTouch ripoff"

Typical example, as much as i really don't want to sound petty, I'm pretty sure you weren't saying sony are ripping off 360 with the trophies idea. Your just being completely biast if you ask me.

Company's do these things because it makes sense, it makes money, and gains interest. Sony & MS do it, it's not wrong, its a business, It's money making. If you think it's ripping off, then every product in the world is ripping another product off all they way back to where it started.

Get out of your pathetic ways for chirst sake.

Home looks great... I don't mind waiting for it if it means that it is going to be good... and just because it is going to be a continuous beta does not mean that it should be released when it is still clearly buggy and glitchy... and from what i can tell, this is going to dominate microsofts avatar service because of the level of interaction between players and also the way that the games are going to be added to the mix... now im not sure if sony is going to get it right but if they do, this will be the best free interactive service of the next gen consoles

I don't see MSFTs Avatars and Sony's Home competing. They are different things altogether. Home is more of a Second life thing, whereas avatars are more of a Mii thing.

They'll have to go with an Autumn launch now, what with the Xbox revamp around the same time.

If not, they'll find the gap they've managed to create/close (depending on who you believe) reversing fairly quickly.

you also have to take into account that sony seems to be at a stand still game wise. they need to release something soon that will bring them attention...but if they let it out to the public too soon, and its crappy...that will just have the opposite effect. 360 is already the number 1 owned and prefered console in the states. and it wont help sony if they get negative attention.

Yea Mike you gotta point...I believe their going to work something out..But they better get they butts up and do it.The 360 and the Wii both dont have long lasting potential as the playstation period in my opinion. The playstaion have sold more consoles then any one.
That Hazi dude better quit talking and do some action because me and my PS3 are getting really bored right now..not that anyone cares..

In general the first 18 months or so of the PS3 haven't been the most explosive, we've seen a glimpse of the playstations' graphical potential in games such as uncharted (which, at the risk of a hurt retaliation from the XB fanboys, is just much better looking than anything I've ever played on the 360). Unfortunately all the big games are still being made, GT5, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, FF13 (although its now going to be on 360 too, the xbox's version is going to be a toned down port) for next year, and with home now being delayed too, ps3 owners are left with joint releases with the 360 and since i own both, it saddens me to see the ps3 not tested to its potential in the way it can be.

The good thing about having both is that i can judge both of them equally, the 360 is the best console in terms of games available and amounts sold (however they did have an 18 moth jump on the ps3 so that's no big deal), but it is the worst console in terms of power and its future.

Well, the main thing is, PS3 owners have a bright 2009 ahead of them, not so sure about 360 owners, but i hope neither gets 'obliterated' competition is good, without it, who would bother?

okey the home thing looks good but it looks like the sims 1 except you can talk big whoop I mean theres things on the ps2 that deserve more hype than this slightly polished ps3 takes on the sims. :(
