We should have bet on Wii, admits Riccitiello

Pumping investment into PS3 and 360 was a strategic mistake, says EA CEO

Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello has admitted that the company put too much focus on PS3 and 360 at the beginning of the current console cycle – and largely ignored the potential of Wii.

However, Speaking to the San Jose Mercury News, Riccitiello said that his company had since become established on Nintendo consoles – and that, for the first time in history, the second and third placed consoles were still ‘meaningful’.

He said: “One thing that's different is we typically figured out who the market leader was going to be before the start of the cycle and bet with our development resources on that platform.

“We made the wrong call there [by betting on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360], which made this transition harder than it would otherwise be. But now we're catching up, and I think we're fine. We've got some incredibly innovative Wii titles, [and] incredibly innovative DS titles coming. And so I think that issue's sort of behind us.”

He added: “[What’s] unusual in this cycle is there's a second and third place that is meaningful, against which we can build a profitable business. That's a good and positive thing.”

Riccitiello also said he was hopeful of pushing EA’s market share on DS and Wii up to match its dominance on PS3 and 360.

He commented: “Can I make a big step in that direction this year? Yes. Can I continue to make steps in that pattern? Yes. Does Nintendo want us to do it? Yes. Does the platform set itself up for that to be possible? Yes. So, it requires focus.”

My heart bleeds...

It was only a matter of time before people became tired with EA's yearly output of the same old titles. Don't blame the consoles, John, just because people are bored of EA's lacklustre output.

Can't believe I'm saying this.

Sadly EA man, your a third party, which means no matter how good the game is it will not appeal to (How did Nintendo PR refer to them??? oh... yes) Geeks and Oukatu. I as an example Boom Blox, which strangely enough published by yourself. It got some Amazing scores (For a EA game). But could it reach the same dizzy heights in the charts as the first party games, sadly NO. Still not sold on my case?
Give Activision a call and how well their "Focus" on the wii was received

b..b..b..but i thought the Wii was just a passing fad ?

No I'm not a Wii fanboy but it is interesting how many people notjust EA dismissed the console early on, ignoring the potential of the largely untapped casual gaming sector.

The Wii version of GH3 was the best-selling one. What would Activision be complaining about?

Yea, Activisions taking a beating.. I mean Guitar Hero Wii sold nothing (rolling eyes).
Boom Blox biggest problem is it was poorly promoted IMHO and it needs a price drop. Its new IP, its actually a fun game, but at $50 for new IP that's been out now for a while, too much... drop it to 29.99 and leverage it for growth of the IP in future versions.
Lets face it, Sega's been 3rd party now for 2 generations, and they haven't put out a fun and exciting Sonic Game since games went 3d, but they are still milking that for what its worth.
IP is where the money is, and sadly EA and others, wrote off the GameCube, and surrendered its base to Nintendo's first party. Now a generation later BIG N is on top and they have no vested IP on BIG N platform to leverage.
I don't think its first party so much as generally poor offerings and little to no established IP on the platform. Big N's making a killing off it IP because its been investing in its IP for years... while the bulk of the 3rd parties were more focused on the other platforms.
Because so much heavy IP was and is "exclusive" most of the 3rd parties had nothing exciting to offer on the new BIG N console because they'd tied themselves to exclusivity on the other consoles.

I completely agree with snuffy...saves me time typing all that. ...but now that it is proven that we have 3 viable consoles this generation, you will see less 3rd party exclusives and more quality across the board. (hopefully, lol)

Fantastic!

Now make sure to bring proper games along for the ride as well, instead of just stepping up party game production.

Poor Wii-men...

Creativity went HD - Wii became a cheap circus

Them kiddo's barely survived the first round of shameless mass-cashing-in on first class pulptitles, and while this grab-o-ton'o'shovelware surrounding BigN's hardware is still gaining and growing like a blob, a virus if you will, it seems now that EA is going to give them the final push, the one strike they are sure not to survive...EA will focus on Wii now.
Me, I'm starting up a gamestoreshelvefactory and I welcome EA's Shovalance of Wii-titles for the years to come.

EA produces the same years with what you can hardly call improvments.
Now they gain even more income on their patches, because it's easier and cheaper to produce for wii than for PS3 or Xbox.
Well done, the shareholders will be happy for sure.

I love how ignorant fanboys get in and take a dump on Ninty and it's 3rd parties just because the success of their system doesn't depend on it like 360 and PS3. Hey fanboys check this out
RE4: Wii has sold 1 million +
Zack and Wiki 500k (with NO promotion)
GH3 2million + (best #'s of the multiplat)
Sonic And the Secret Rings 1million +
Lego Indiana Jones 300k+ and climbing (also the best out of ALL multiplat versions)
Carnival Games 1million +
Red Steel 1million +
Ray Man Raving Rabbids 1million =

And there's more, I know, I know, someone's going to refute those games as being kiddy or not up to the elitists' gamers standards and a slew of other excuses. But the fact remains that 3rd Parties ARE ACTUALLY SELLING ON THE Wii!!! I mean it's not Ninty's fault they could (and have) survive off of 1st parties alone... I mean we know if Sony and MS had to rely on 1st party titles they'd be out of business in 30 sec. flat.

And then you figure that EA on this site none-the-less actually said Boom Blox (which is a steady seller at retail) has EXCEEDED their expectations... And I'm forced to ask the fanboys "Hate much?"
